You can't have been here recently Jared - it is very busy during the day - so much so that at peak times, there can be as many as 20 in line for departure and lines of arrivals. This is also for future growth as well - the Norwegian is just the first announcement - there are more in the offing. Future growth of Ft Lauderdale is one of the main reasons for the new runway.

Couldn't agree more Mark - on more than one occasion we have had to wait for landing traffic in order to take off for over 15 minutes. One time during cruise season the line for takeoff was 30 airplanes deep, resulting in taxi delays around 45 mins to an hour. That second runway is going to help tremendously! Only question becomes where do you spot from?

FLL is much busier than most people think. I can't wait to see the new runway completed it's going to be quite a site.

Wow! Guess my outdated statement is an excuse to get down there and get some beach time... haha :)
Now mark... Are they extending it and widening it? Or just extending it? And has any body seen them use runway13 31? Thanks mark!

Jared - extending and widening - the old runway 9R/27L has been demolished and is being rebuilt. Runway 13/31 will be decommissioned in May and will never be opened again - it is totally disappearing. Currently, during peak times, everything smaller than a Boeing 757-300 lands on 13 so that they can line up aircraft on 9 and get them off - the only time that halts during peak times is when Delta or united bring in a 753 or Fedex brings in a heavy.

FLL is quickly becoming the LGA of the the south, and this project was much-needed.

I flew in/out of there in '98 on ATA 727's, and it seemed like a large airport then...sounds like they really need to ramp things up
