Pictures From Todays Water Rescue Near JFK

I was sitting home and heard on the local FD scanner that they were having a hard time counting how many people were in the water because they were far off the shore. Since it was only a block or so away from my house I figure maybe I can help them by looking through the zoom lense.

    Some nice helicopter rescue shots.

There was two Aviation helicopters. Only one did the rescue while the other was scouting the bay for other possible victims which there were none. There was two and one was rescued right away. They airlifted this one and put him down near the toll in Broad Channel and transported by ambulance. I have no idea why they didn't just fly him straight to Jamaica hospital since it would have been a lot quicker.

Jamaica Hospital doesnt have a dedicated helipad!! The rare times there would be a medevac they would land in a park off of Atlantic Ave!! But that was in the 90s. And that is probably covered with snow!! I believe they might have used the lot behind the hospital also at one time but that isnt there anymore!! They put up a new facility years ago on that location! And if injuries not considered life threatening an ambulance with PD escort to JH works just fine!!

I guess it has been a while since I heard of a helicopter landing at Jamaica hospital then. Thinking about it it was probably about 1992 or so. Never thought about them taking a helipad away when they built new hospital.

Vinny - definitely a nice job of being in the right spot at the right time! The Gothamist blog just ran a story and you might want to contact them to see if they'd be interested in the pictures. http://gothamist.com/2013/02/10/vide...yakers_who.php Your pictures are much better than the video.

Here are the shots on Flickr http://www.flickr.com/photos/caddych...7632741548257/

This was my first time editing shots in CS6 I know these could be done better. It was a good learning lesson.

Phil if you need original raw files I would be glad to let you have them to show around. These guys in the helicopter were amazingly steady. Would love it if they got a chance to see them somehow.
