    Today in Air Force History

    Not without a tanker...

On May 31, 1967, while piloting a KC-135 Stratotanker over the Gulf of Tonkin, Maj. John H. Casteel and crew from the 902nd Air Refueling Squadron carried out a series of emergency refuelings that saved six fuel-starved Navy fighters. It was the first multiple air refueling between a KC-135 and a Navy A-3 Skywarrior tanker which simultaneously refueled a Navy F-8 Crusader under emergency fuel shortages and combat conditions. The action earned Major Casteel and his crew the Mackay Trophy for meritorious flight achievement. They were the first Strategic Air Command tanker crew to win.

Major Casteel and crew: Capt Dean L. Hoar, Capt. Richard Trail, and Master Sgt. Nathan C. Campbell from the 902nd ARS at Clinton-Sherman Air Force Base, Okla., performed a tri-level refueling engagement. The crew was credited with eight aircraft saves that day.

Now tell me the KC-135 isn't a badass airplane, and SAC didn't have the best crewdogs in the world.

Show some respect to your elders - remember, we were Gods - we made water burn!

But seriously, are you in the 305th AMW at McG? Because you know, back in the olden days, that was my old wing, the 305th Air Refueling Wing, at Grissom.
