    I going to DC on Wednesday, can anyone tell me if you are able to use a tripod. I have a small one and im looking to taking some HDRs.

    The Capitol Police get touchy about tripods - the assumption is that if you're using one, it's commercial photography and you need a permit. National Park Service properties have the same rule, but it's rarely enforced.

    You can't set up a tripod near the White House.

    so, if you bring a tripod they just assume you're a commercial photographer and say no even if you say you're just a hobbyist? or are they worried it'll turn into a transformer or something

    I doubt they are worried about someone posing as photog and using the tripod as a disguise. I bet is the same as with any other public venue that attracts many people in a confined space where it can pose a hazard.
