    787 at DCA! 5/7

A few shots from the 787 landing at DCA today. There were quite a few people out, and although the weather didn't cooperate it was a great sight.

I may be way behind, but is anyone planning to use the 787 into DCA or is this purely publicity? If the former, who? And will this be the largest aircraft to serve DCA? (Currently and ever)

Nice shots, John! I was bummed I wasn't able to make it out to Gravely Point for the arrival as I had a final.

I'm hoping I'll have an opportunity to see it at some point this week, if not I'll have to keep an eye out for the departure.

Very nice... I saw the video Boeing posted on twitter. The moment it passes in front of the Washington Monument is priceless...

This is all goodwill, runways are too short to operate a fully loaded 787, also gate areas are not wide enough to handle the wingspan.

I am curious about who will be checking it out, as it's going to be there all week, making it one of the longest stops of the Dream Tour. Media and airline and airport folks, no doubt, and probably some FAA paper pushers who worked on the certification process from their desks in Washington but have never actually seen the plane up close. But also maybe some men in uniform from that big, five sided building just up the road who might have their own uses for a long haul widebody aircraft.

More here about previous widebodies at DCA: http://www.nycaviation.com/2012/05/f...agan-national/
Ladies and gentlemen, this is your captain speaking. We have a small problem.
All four engines have stopped. We are doing our damnedest to get them under control.
I trust you are not in too much distress. —Captain Eric Moody, British Airways Flight 9

Thanks all! Sorry you missed it Gordon - it should be here all week, its parked at the old terminal if you can get. A 19 departure on Friday would be amazing!

Great shots especially considering the ugly weather, love the last one in particular as it documents for history the 787 really did go to DCA. So glad they were on Runway 19 that day, pretty sure the crew loved flying the River visual with the 787, likely there most fun approach of the entire tour. Almost surprised if they decided to do DCA they didn't also include LGA, I am sure it would have no difficulty getting in and out though like DCA remote parking would have been required, and since all the area's I can think of are needed for RON aircraft it would have been likely limited to a day visit.

    Cheers

A C-17 with a medical emergency was cleared to land on DCA 19 a few years ago but was over the runway's maximum weight so he was waved off. It continued to ADW, its original destination.

Also this is the second largest aircraft to ever land there behind the DC-10.

John, they're departing on 19 at the moment. Hopefully that lasts for the remainder of the morning, the 787 is supposed to take off around 11am I believe. Unfortunately, I have to miss it for work but I hope you get some great shots if you're planning on seeing it depart.
