    Help identify a plane?

Hi. I’m new to these forums, so pardon me if I’ve posted this query to either the wrong place or the wrong people. I’m not an avid plainspotter like many of you, per se, but I’ve always had a fascination for aircraft of all sorts – particularly after I picked up my first digital camera, as I’m lucky enough to live directly under one of the flight paths for aircraft approaching the NYC metropolitan area.

My interest in this forum was prompted by the following situation. Over the past few days, I’ve spotted what I judge to be the same Lufthansa 747 on approach to one of our area airports (I originally assumed to Newark, because that’s most likely where most of the Continental airliners I photograph seem to be headed; but, as this is obviously an international flight, I suppose JFK is another possibility.)

Just for curiosity’s sake, I’ve been trying to see if I can glean from online information just which flight this might be, and more specifically, its origin. As I said, I’ve seen it on 3 recent afternoons, all within about the same 20 – 30 minute window. I’ve tried using one of the sites I use to track my aunt’s flight when she comes up to visit from Florida, f l i g h t a w a r e d o t c o m [Not sure whether there’s a restriction against posting links in this forums, as I’ve encountered on other occasions.] Since that hasn’t helped, though, I’ve been trying to just look up local airports’ arrival timetables, searching for a Lufthansa 747 that’s due in around 4:30, 4:45 pm, or so.

Is there any better way to go about doing this? Thanks, in advance, for your help.

Hi there and welcome to the forum. If you can make out the registration of the aircraft you can go to http://www.flightaware.com and search by the registration.

Welcome to the site! You are most certainly allowed to link to other sites so long as they are not intended as advertisement for them.

You may not be an avid planespotter YET, but I sense the force lies within you....I give it a year tops before you're meeting up with us and posting images on a regular basis

    Welcome!

    Daily FRA-EWR-FRA is LH402/403

You can see the type and reg of each flight using http://data.flight24.com

    http://data.flight24.com/flights/lh402/
    http://data.flight24.com/flights/lh403/

Another site to have fun with is http://www.flightradar24.com/ as you can track overflying planes, click on them and view all kinds of info.

Thanks, everyone who answered my post - both for making me feel welcome here, and for helping to identify the Lufthansa flight. It certainly helped that the Reg # of the aircraft was apparent in my photograph, so I was able to identify the plane on http://data.flight24.com/ and learn, on Mar 17 around that time, which route and flight # it was flying. As a further test, in the event I had not been able to see the Reg #, I found I was still able to identify the flight by using the same site to check afternoon arrivals at Newark (could've been JFK or LaGuardia too, of course) for a plane of that type.

Very useful sites; thank you, everyone. FlightRadar24 was especially cool, and I'm sure to enjoy playing with it.

One thing about FlightRadar24, you don't get all the traffic information over North America as you do in Europe.

I actually noticed that, yes. For instance, I saw that Lufthansa flight the next day (i.e. today) on FlightAware, showing it had been over MA and was nearing the final leg of its journey. But alas, it did not show up on FlightRadar. I had thought that maybe I inadvertently had some kind of filter activated, such that it was only showing certain planes. But you just confirmed that was not the case.

...Kindof a bummer, but oh well.

Very true. I should have mentioned that. It is getting better though.
