Shutter Priority - that's the dial setting, at least for Canon. Av mode is Aperture priority.

I think you must be using a different camera than me.

    I have:

    Thats it!, Shutter priority

    shutter priority = Tv
    aperture priority = Av
    Manual = M

    ;)
The three most common expressions in aviation are, "Why is it doing that?", "Where are we?" and "Oh Crap".

The thing about the 250 shutter setting, at least for me, is it tends to blur the prop-and the plane.

    How do you prevent that?

Good panning skills, solid AF system, and a lot of luck!

I know some guys who will shoot no more than 1/100th to try to come close to full prop disks...

Forget blurring, how do they keep the image from being too bright to make anything out?

When you shoot in Shutter Priority, the camera will close down your aperture - there are limits to that, and you might get some overexposure, but usually I'm good on all but the brightest of days with ISO 100. Of course, with a small aperture, you see all the dust spots on your sensor...

This was from this afternoon, 1/50 sec, f/20, ISO 100:

So, manual for prop blur, then?

No, I was shooting in Shutter Priority at 1/50 second. The camera set the aperture to properly expose the photo.

Great stuff here. Wanted to contribute a few prop blur shots, but alas, I find myself technologically challenged.

Hosting pics in two different spots, Webshots and Flickr. Tried pasting the url link of each as defined by their sites and no luck. Used the upload pics option on the "reply to" thread but images are not showing. It lists the URL but when message saved and viewed, no pics.

    Can someone help the boy?

What works for me is, at least for Flickr:

    Go to the image.

Do the select size option and choose the one you want.

Right click the picture and choose 'copy image location'

Then in the reply, use the [IMG][/IMG] tags with the URL between them.

Well let's give this a try.....

Perriwen, you seem to be onto something here.....What I wanted to add to the prop blur discussion was that asb had done a whole thread on this issue a while back. It was fun going out taking shots for this particular effect. I learned that helicopters can be particularly difficult in that their prop speed is much slower, requiring a slower shutter speed to get the same effect. It was a lot of fun and that is what I like about these forums. Learning from one another and the inspiration that comes from one anothers work....Here are a few more

Definitely...the same is true of double-blade props and even doubly so with double-blade props on slower engines (think Stearman & WACO's). Even in flight powering through a climb I had to stop down to 1/20th to get a full disk, which just wasn't worth the trade off in sharpness to me.

For example, this was at 1/100th:
