USS Michael Murphy – Commissioning

It's a little early but mark your calanders for this one honoring a Long Island native, US NAvy SEAL Michael Murphy of Patchogue.

The commissioning of the USS Michael Murphy DDG-112 will take place on Saturday, October 6, 2012 at 10:00 am . Due to force protection issues and limited space, it will be “by invitation only” Details on the registration process which will be web based will be posted on the http://www.theussmichaelmurphy.org site when available. The registration web site should be up and running in about 6 weeks. There will be a post commissioning reception after the ceremony.

Went to the event today. Despite the small crowd it took almost a half hour to make it on board. You get to see the bow, walk through the corridors to visit the galley and come out through the helicopter hangar and visit the helipad before leaving. ( no helicopter though) The bridge and all other sections of the ship were off limits.

Also walked by the Intrepid and they had a Lear 85 mockup on display. Have no idea how long it'll be there...

Flyby
Flyby is to commemorate the dedication of the USS Michael Murphy. RIVER 11, a flight of 2 F-18s, will arrive at LGA on Friday, October 5^th. The flight will depart LGA VFR at approximately 1430 Z (1030 LCL) and expect vectors to a location at or south of `the Verrazano Bridge (as available) to hold at an altitude assigned by ATC. The lead pilot will advise ATC 2 minutes prior to departing the hold. After passing the Verrazano Bridge northbound, the aircraft will descend to 1000' and increase speed to 300 KIAS (waiver on file). After passing the USS Michael Murphy, the flight will continue northbound over the Hudson and expect VFR altitude assignment and vectors for sequencing to LGA (Note: Should the aircraft be separated for sequencing, wingman callsign will be RIVER 12.). The flight will depart for MSY on Sunday, October 7th.

Parachute Jump
BAYRAIDER 11, a UH-60, will depart TEB VFR approximately one hour prior to the jump. The helicopter will be handed off to LGA Area and will hold as assigned by ATC and will advise ATC prior to departing the hold. Note: A second UH-60 will be at TEB as back-up/auxiliary; if both are used for the jump, they will operate as a flight under the BAYRAIDER 11 call-sign) A total of two passes will be made: 1. At 2500' to drop wind streamers 2. At 4500' (or as assigned by ATC) to drop jumpers (3 jumpers, one pass). The pilot will make the following calls: "Over jump site." "Two minutes to jumpers away." "Jumpers away." "Jumpers on the ground." BAYRAIDER 11 will then return to TEB. NOTE: THIS ENTIRE OPERATION WILL BE EXECUTED ON BOTH FRI. OCT. 5 (PRACTICE RUN) and SAT. OCT. 6 (EVENT).

In connection with the U.S.S. Michael Murphy Commissioning Ceremony, the following aviationactivities and cannon salutes will take place on Friday, October 5th (Practice Day) and Saturday, October6th (Commissioning Day). Please note that all aviation activities are weather permitting.

•  On Friday, October 5th at 9:45am (local time), the United States Navy Parachute DemonstrationTeam (known as the “Leap Frogs”) will execute a practice parachute jump over the HudsonRiver (adjacent to Manhattan’s Pier 88). The jump will take place at an altitude ofapproximately 4,500 ft., as the team (3 jumpers total) will employ the use of a UH-60 helicopter(see attached photo) to execute the jump. The aircraft will originate from and return toTeterboro Airport (NJ).
  
  
  
•  On Friday, October 5th at 10:05am (local time), the U.S.S. Michael Murphy (located atManhattan’s Pier 88) will conduct a cannon salute test, consisting of one (1) 40MM round, inpreparation for the commissioning ceremony.

•  On Saturday, October 6th at 11:00am (local time), two (2) FA-18 fighter jets (see enclosedphoto) will conduct a flyover of the Hudson River and the U.S.S Michael Murphy at Manhattan’sPier 88. The aircraft will pass over the U.S.S. Michael Murphy at an altitude of approximately1,000 feet. The aircraft will then return to their point of origin (LaGuardia Airport: LGA) via theHudson River following the activity.
