I drove up from Philly just to catch this thing. When it appeared from behind the building I was next to, I was stunned at how good it looked in person. I was also surprised by how quiet it was. I felt like the damn paperazzi though, laying low in my car till the last second before jumping out, getting the shots, then flooring it out of there. All those Starsky & Hutch episodes finally paid off

    Hi guys,

I made the mad dash up from DC to catch it this morning:

Only Cary and I were out there this morning, which surprised me.
Many thanks to Senga for real time updates and navigation assistance and also Matthew for updates :)

Just met Nick out at the beach at JFK too!

Awesome Shot Sunil! That Nikkor 80-400 VR still a workhorse! Crispomat!

Nice shooting with you! I was going to head to EWR but with no confirmed time till last minute I bagged it for the TNT 777 departure which worked out nice. I can't believe the Dreamliner did a special request and banked the opposite way the usual 22 EWR departures do. If it banked the normal way it would have been a heck of a shot!

Hmmm, wasn't aware of any spot to see the runway from the turnpike side of the field is this a spot that can be shared? It could come in handy in the future! Very Nice shot indeed...

Rule number 1... When you work in a building near the airport... always tip the building maintenance guy at Christmas. He knows how to get up on the roof.

    Unfortunately, he has the key.

Sunil, that is one heck of a departure shot. Well done sir! That is the 80-400VR Nikkor? Impressive, given how much people rag on it

Thank you! Yes, this is with the old beat up 80-400 VR. It is a great lens if you set it correctly: turn off the VR and shoot it at f7.1. It's not a perfect lens by any means, but given the range, it is the perfect travel lens.

Rumor has it that Nikon filed a patent for an internal focus 80-400 design... time will tell if we ever see it.

    Sunil

PS, I wanted to post the shot quickly so I edited it on my crappy laptop and missed the huge dust spot and color cast (my D200 likes to cast every shot green for some reason). It's re uploaded looking a little better I hope.
