*Rumour* Potential announcement Thursday 16th February: Qantas to drop JFK services

    Hello there,

been a while since ive posted here, but thought I would share something that has been swirling around the local media here in Australia as well as from numerous sources which all point to JFK services as well as Frankfurt being dropped by Qantas this Thursday 16th at the Company's Half Yearly results board meeting/announcement. Services were downgraded from 744 to A332 as many remember and apparently the JFK LAX route isnt doing too well on many fronts.

I wish to stress this is NOT confirmed as of yet, and there is a good chance it will be announced on Thursday. I just thought I would give you guys a heads up before it happens (if it does) so don't shoot the messenger!

Will post the link/discussion back here on the 16th! hope for the spotters sake it isn't true, but Qantas have made many suprising moves before so it wouldn't shock me..

    Cheers

Wasn't the JFK-LAX route being dropped a rumor over the summer?

    Sure was,

However the Airline had other pressing concerns at the last agm, ie the grounding followed days later, now it seems they are somewhat back on track (supposedly better results tba thursday) and now are looking at leaning less profitable routes (if that makes sense!)

Really wouldn't be a surprise and probably a good decision from a business standpoint. They dropped SFO because it became mainly an O&D city where their One World Partner AA didn't have many connecting opportunities vs. DFW where they could connect passengers to points all across the Americas. Dropping JFK and feeding passengers on AA at LAX through to NY would make more sense then operating their own metal to the east. Its no longer about prestige routes anymore...it’s all about alliances and taking advantage of the cost savings involved in using your partners resources vs. expending your own.

Rumors debunked in announcements today, per Will Horton who is there:
    • SYD-LAX-JFK is actually getting an UPGRADE back to the 747
    • No change to FRA service mentioned
    • AKL-LAX and SIN-BOM to be eliminated May 6th
    • SYD-BKK to be downgraded from 747 to A330

Ladies and gentlemen, this is your captain speaking. We have a small problem.
All four engines have stopped. We are doing our damnedest to get them under control.
I trust you are not in too much distress. —Captain Eric Moody, British Airways Flight 9

Awesome news! Too bad they got rid of the Wunala scheme. I am surprised though that they are upgrading the equipment. I always heard that the A330 flights were fairly empty.

Aren't they painting another 744 with a special scheme?

On the bright side, maybe we'll get the Grand Prix scheme.

Qantas promised they will have a new Aboriginal designed scheme by end of 2012... of course they repaint Wunala just before we get 747 service back and with no hope of me ever seeing it in person! LOL.

Does it appear likely that the Aboriginal scheme will be on a 744 or an A380?

This was discussed when JFK lost the 747 but is the belly cargo the deciding factor here?
