I've seen it orbiting JFK a few times in the last year, but am never able to catch it. Happy Mark could!

Nice shot, Mark. I flew over ADW this morning after departing DCA and it looked like there was also a 767-300 accompanying her.

A flare dispense system, same as the VC-25s.

I believe it's an IR ( infared ) jammer, it should be one near each engine exhaust in addition to the APU exhaust.

Suresh posted some info from VC-25 on his FB page a few days ago...

Some interesting AF1 countermeasures that are hard to miss! (How to cover one's ass when on a 747!) [*note: this is not classified info and is available in the public domain].

Current analysis shows these 3 systems (and others) on the tail of AF1:
    1. AN/ALQ-204 Matador infrared (IR) countermeasures device located above APU exhaust sends pulsed IR signals to foil attacks by heat-seeking missiles.

2.AN/AAR-54(V) missile launch warning receiver located on two sides of the APU exhaust cone is intended to report and track missile threats by zeroing in on their ultraviolet exhaust signature.

3.AN/AAQ-24 Nemesis Directional Infra-Red Counter Measures (DIRCM) system under APU exhaust, which can be directed by the AAR-54, fires pulsating flashes of IR energy that confuse a missile’s guidance system.

    Great document

Saudi BBJ on the ground this morning (any ID?); and the trackers say Mexican AF 733 TP-02 was in and out. I thought I saw an out of place tail back by the DL hangars, but couldn't confirm anything, and it departed while I was in a meeting.

FYI -her current tail number is actually "M-STAR" on the top engine and is registered in the Isle of Man!
