A few weeks ago, I revisited St. Maarten and St. Barts for the second time. As with my first trip to SXM, it took me a couple of days to get the hang of shooting from Maho Beach, but the weather was poor anyway. The third day I was there, a police car stopped on the road, and honked its horn. When no one moved, the officers got out and started yelling at the people next to the fence (off to the side near the warning signs) to get back on the beach side. One spotter tried to argue that people had been hanging onto the fence near the centerline all day, and one of the officers went ballistic and yelled in a very threatening tone. The spotter retreated, and the cops drove off. I had heard about incidents like that at SXM before, but never saw it. That was the only time it happened during my trip - the other times the cops just drove by, even when people were hanging onto the fence.
I will be posting photos in a random order (as they are added to A.net), and adding some text to go along with them. Enjoy!
This was my catch of the year - taken shortly before I had to head back to the airport to go home. Instead of a standard approach, the Copa descended to a very low altitude, well short of the runway, and kept it there:
Here's someone's video with the same approach:
One of the coolest aviation moments I've seen in a long time.
Speaking of low approaches, at St. Barts, this Islander nearly landed in the sand:
And back at SXM, this guy would have gotten my First Officer of the year award, had I not already given it to another DAE pilot who did the same thing a few days prior:
A nice surprise (albeit under filtered sun) was a new type for DAE, the MD-83, on it's first flight into SXM:
Many more photos in the coming days and weeks
