DELTA AIR LINES CONVAIR 880

The CONVAIR 880 was first flown on 27 January 1959.

TWA and DELTA AIR LINES had ordered 40, another 25 were sold to such airlines as NORTHEAST and JAPAN AIR LINES.

The Convair 880 offered a better speed than its rivals, the Boeing 707 and the Douglas DC8.

little know factoid: it was originally to be called the "golden airliner", as convair was going to gold anodize the 880's. when the cost estimate for that came through, the company decided against it, but occasionally the name "golden airliner" still appears in reference to the 880.

fuel burn was 13,000 pounds per hour in cruise for 100 pax, but for that it was king of city pair speed records.
