    JFK 02/04

    Hey guys.

Today I was at Panera for my first attempt ever at capturing the birds, so here's my first set. Keep in mind that my photography/editing skills are still limited. I also don't really know how rare certain aircrafts are, so I apologize if you've seen those a gazillion times before. Any constructive criticism is welcome!

I noticed a fellow spotter in his car. Might have been Manny if I refer to the "show off your car" thread, but maybe it was just somebody else

    Rom,

Great stuff for your first outting! I stopped by briefly by Panera to have lunch before heading over to Inwood for a few shots hoping to catch the Finnair MD-11 (which I missed, because I decided to relocate when ATC told Finnair they were going to be vectored for 31R). I should have known better!!! I'll post some of my photo's later tonight. By the way I did bump into Manny at Costco.

Rom, I must have missed you by 5 minutes... I was there for about 1 hour before I relocated to Costco to also try and catch the Finnlusive MD-11 Cargo. I never quite heard the vectors while listening to Approach (CAMRN) as there was a lot going on... then Mark and Conrad and I stepped out of our cars to wait and they must have requested 31L and gotten it from the tower :-(

ONLY REASON I calmed down (I was very upset as yet ANOTHER WEEK goes by and no Finn MD-11) is that the weather turned not so pretty by the time she came in...

Here it is on 31L from Costco...

This one however more than made up for the loss of the Finn ;-)

What are the odds that the AstroJet, a very VERY RARE visitor to JFK would show up the next day after I missed it for not paying attention to the departures? Must be 1,000,000 : 1 ... here it is yesterday after I realized it was too late. I figured I would NEVER get another chance lol.

Rom, I forgot... your images have a bit of vignetting... what lens/camera combo? Lightroom 3.3 and Adobe Camera Raw 6.x (ACR) have a wonderful new lens correction module with built in profiles for many lens/camera combos. It does a remarkable job of minimizing Vignetting and CA...

    ROM, love Qatar & Virgin...
Manny the Astrojet is a golden shot indeed! BTW I love the LR's lens correction, however I cannot find profile for Canon 100-400. Any suggestion.

    Raj,

It is indeed there :-) But you should have LR 3.3 or ACR 6.x ... that is the latest version and has the most profiles.

Thanks for your input Manny, and although I have just learned what vignetting means, I cannot agree more. This is the first thing that I noticed when importing my photos. I use a D60, with a Nikkor 55-200mm VR f/4 5.6G ED lens. I will try to get my hands on the software you suggested. But in any case, yes, I would love to find a way to fix this.

Could it be caused by the way I shoot? I totally assume my newbie status, and I've been shooting in auto all day. There's a lot that I need to learn.

EDIT: I now have Lightroom 3.3.

Skyteam, Susan G. Komen, CRJ Pink Ribbon, all came in ... very nice indeed

    Rom,

Yes, the way you shoot that lens is important to reduce the effect, but I hate to tell you this, it will still have a hint of it no matter what. The camera is not at fault, your lens design is. In making lower cost super zooms, the engineers have to compromise on certain things. One of them is size. By making the barrel smaller, they introduce vignetting.

One way to combat it is to STOP DOWN your exposures... meaning you use a smaller aperture (higher numerical f/stop) or as stated before, through software compensation.

Cathy Cargo (no silver bullet )

    and as usual, Gordon's A340-313 :-)

..although I think this is not the one he likes (is it a -642 that you like?)

Makes sense Manny, and I appreciate the advice. I will work on this, until I can afford a better lens.

Love your shot of Lady Penelope!
