    Fire Island Light House Construction

I thought I had seen something posted here, but I know Fred mentioned this to me...there is a new building going up next to the Fire Island Light House and today I took a ride to see what it was all about. They are erecting a building to display the original Fresnel Lens used in the light house. The light was installed in 1858 when the current light house was built, and was used until 1933. After its removal, it was displayed at the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia, where it is now in storage. The building is expected to be completed by Memorial Day 2011. The boat house, which was on that site, is being moved close to its historic location on the bay side of the island.

You can see the top of the building just poking up over the trees. In talking to some of the staff, they said the location of the building is on part of the foundation of the original 1826 light house, which precluded excavation to lower the new building.

    Model of the building.

How do you know the name of the deer?
The three most common expressions in aviation are, "Why is it doing that?", "Where are we?" and "Oh Crap".
