    ANC Spotting! (08/23/2010)

Well took another day trip up to ANC yesterday as it was actually supposed to have blue skies instead of the normal grey one's that seem to follow me up there. Got up there and condition's were nearly perfect! Look forward to going up again in a few weeks and then November for some snow action!!! Tryed some new angles too. Please feel free to give some feedback! And like always more to come.
Also if you would like any for backgrounds let me know the resolution you need and I'll make a larger file for you.

Starting with a couple of FedEx MD-11's-

    Polar Air 747-

    UPS 747-

    Cathay Pacific Cargo-

Yeah, it was in the bag but I hate changing and risking dust spots, so the least amount of changing the better to me!

That is the main reason I zoomed in when I took that shot was to see what that bump was. No idea, anyone else have any guesses?

Appears to look like a camera pod. Find a closeup of a G550, and you'll see the same bump out on the bottom of the nose.
The question though is why FedEx would have a camera on board?

Feeling slightly "Nosey" up at PANC that day? LOL I don't remember the exact specifics of it but do recall reading in a trade publication about FedEx playing with somthing similar to EVS/SVS on MD11's to see if they could enhance their low vis approach ability capibilities. I guess they are indeed testing somthing of that nature.

It is an E.V.S.(Enhanced Vision System), used for shooting CAT III instrument approaches and other challenging approaches. It works in combination with a HUD(Heads Up Display.)

lear45 ---> does that include FLIR? I think at some point I was told that the bump is used for their IR cameras so they can see the runway in the cockpit on the MFD through the weather.

Everytime I see Polar I die a little inside. So many memories with them back from 2000-2003 at building 87. Its a shame such a good company has been reduced so much. Oh how I wish those days were still around. And oh how I wish I could see them in person again. Very nice shots seahawks. Yes I may be 20 but I have a history. Building 87 at JFK is like a 2nd home to me. I'm glad I am able to be back but I wish I could still see Polar
