The Tamron is Macro...not a normal lens. It's meant for very close-up photos. I'm not sure that's what you want.

Otherwise, I would always choose Canon. Although 200+ is a lot for an everyday lens, I think that one would be your best bet.

I thought the Tamron was both? Guess I was wrong. :oops:

I need a lens for kids sporting events and just every day backyard pictures. Also would use it for the airport but at the shows I would use the sigma beast I have

Actually, I use a Canon 28-200 as my everyday lens. It's not a "fast" lens, and I would like something wider (still use my old 300D kit lens for that) but it gets the job done for me. Bought it about 5 years ago, so I don't remember what I paid, but it was in the neighborhood of what you are looking at Christina.

I have a Tamron 28-300 that I got from B&H - since it's been on the camera, it's never been off - I find it perfect for aviation and general.

My longest lens is the Tamaron 70-300 and also has Macro.. it has a switch and does not go into maco mode unless I put it in the mode.

Christina, my advice is to see if wherever you get the lens from you ask to try it on your camera first.
I went to a Tamron demo this spring and tried the 18-270 for kicks. From 18-175 it's a very smooth lens which delivers good performance. From 176-270mm though, the lens seems to "thunk" as it goes the extra distance. This was the same for both Canon (myself) and Nikon mounts (friend of mine). So we weren't sure if it was a bad set they brought, or a design flaw? We are leaning towards design flaw being it happened on lenses for two different brands of cameras. It's a shame though, as I have two short Tamron zooms (17-50 & 28-75) which are both outstanding in build quality and picture results.

With your choices, I'd go with the Canon 28-200 as Moose recommends.

I have the Tamron 18-270. I got it as a "walk around" lens back in December. While I never intended it for aviation, it hasn't left my camera much since I got it. It certanly has the zoom clunk issues that John mentioned, but it hasn't made me take the lens off.


I put my canon 70-200 f/4 back on for s bit and it certainly is much smoother, but the versatility of having the huge zoom range plus image stabilization can't (overlooked.

I also had looked at the 18-200s from both Sigma and Canon but made my decision based upon range and image quality reviews from dpreview.com

I used to have the Sigma 18-200 lens for my Sony and I thought it was a great lens, but when you zoom in on some of the images in PS, there is a bit of image distortion around the corners & edges. Granted only my friend who is a professional noticed this, so I thought the pictures were fine, but take that for what you will. Now that I have the Nikon D90, I use an 18-105VR as my walkaround lens. Though I miss the 200mm range on the one lens, it's easy enough to change over to the telephoto if you want that kind of range.

I've seen the results from Mark's Tamron 28-300 and can safely say that they are excellent. I don't think you'll see much of a difference in image quality on Sigma/Tamron vs. Canon/Nikon. What you will notice is the resale value of third party lenses takes a huge hit over time vs. manufacturer glass. But if you plan on owning the lens for the long haul and not reselling it or trading it in at some point, then that really doesn't matter.

Christina, I'm a bit of a purist in the sense that I prefer Canon lenses on a Canon body. So I would opt for the 28-200 given the options.
But please don't go by me. I'm just a purist in that sense. I am currently tossing around of getting a Nikon body but only with a Nikon lens.

However, what "sigma beast" are you working with? Once I went digital, I consolidated lenses. So I'm down to the 100-400 for close ups.

My general use walk around lens is the Canon 17-85 IS. Leaves a small gap between 85mm and 100mm but its great for closer up A/C shots as well as for the use with the family.

Ok so I decided on the Tamron 18-270. Every where I look it has great reviews. Another reason is the 6 year warranty. I really prefer the canon 28-300 but that is not happening any time soon lol. Hopefully i will have it in the next week. Thanks too every one for their advice. I am sure I will change my mind lol

Their repair is located by LIE and Sunken Meadow. I am not nice when it comes to lens abuse.... 17k shots this past airshow.
