    Meeting Politicians at the Parade!

Memorial Day is one of my favorite holidays. A parade through my small hometown of College Point is a tradition, and all of you guys who don't see me at Jones Beach should know that this is why. Though the parade seems to shrink every year, I can't pass on cheering with my family at the members of our military and other local organizations that march.

One other thing I like is that I get to see, meet and mingle with some politicians. They show up at the beginning and stand around waiting for it to start. Since I was in my mid-teens, I would take this opportunity to shake hands, talk or even poke fun at those that came by.

This year was one of the first that I didn't see Bloomberg marching, which seems to be because he will not be seeking re-election and just doesn't need to. I feel used now. Another strike in his growing list of them.

Though I'm not a fan of Charles Schumer (example here), I must give him credit in that he shows up to this small town EVERY year.

One thing I do not like about him in the parades is that he does not march with the other politicians....he separates himself. Even more annoying is that, in doing so, he ha his staff carry signs that says he supports the troops. It's a bit much to me. I don't think it's the time to campaign for himself.

This year was my first time meeting New York City Comptroller John Liu, who formerly was the councilman of Flushing, Queens. I've never been a huge fan of him, either, but he was very, very friendly, and I have nothing against him personally.

My favorite is local State Senator Frank Padavan. Sometimes in a suit, sometimes in various military uniforms that he wore during his military career back in the dizzay. Some years ago, while in uniform, I told him he had a striking resemblance to General Douglas MacArthur, for which he actually seems to remember me....today telling Mel that she has his condolences for being with me. :)

Other politicians that showed up include former councilman Tony Avella (great guy), and Councilman Dan HAlloran, who I was hoping to meet but did not get the chance.
