According to flightaware, there is a JL 787 inbound to JFK today. Flight 8808, shows as being due into JFK around 4:00. Nice one!, perhaps a test run for the start of services next month?

This flight, apparently, is a charter for Masahiro Tanaka, the new Yankees pitcher.

Apparently due to snow at NRT. The Yankees didn't want to wait, so they chartered this 787, or so the story goes.

True, but it's an 8pm arrival (with a RON and a morning departure), so there's only roughly a 4-6 week window to catch an arrival in light. I'd go today, but the A train closure has other ideas... (and it's not worth dropping the coin on LIRR since, as you note, it's not a one-off)

A-Train closure? It's fully up and running in the Rockaways this weekend.
