"Beside the towering gray bridge the lighthouse still bravely stands. Though it knows now that it is little, it is still VERY, VERY PROUD."
-The Little Red Lighthouse and the Great Gray Bridge by Hildegarde H. Swift, Lynd Ward
Standing under the George Washington Bridge on the New York side is Jeffrey's Hook Light. Originally it was constructed in 1889 and stood at Sandy Hook, NJ until 1921 when it was relocated to its current location. It ceased operation in 1947 and in 1951, propositions to dismantle it were announced. Public outcry prevented the dismantling. It was deactivated until 2002, until it was relit.
