    ISP back in the day

When I was a kid I remember seeing this Newsday article on ISP and how the airport was growing. I've had the article now for 20 years and man does it tell a story. This was the main picture from the article. With the latest post on ISP I remember I still had the article...lots of old eye candy never to be seen again.

Thats amazing. There is more traffic there than WN has at ISP on a given day! And I Iove how ISP and WN call it progress. WTF?
And I, I took the path less traveled by
and that has made all the difference......yet...
I have a feeling a handle of people are going to be very interested in what I post in the near future.

Was that the whole terminal back then?

And what's with the cockeyed parking arrangement?
Ladies and gentlemen, this is your captain speaking. We have a small problem.
All four engines have stopped. We are doing our damnedest to get them under control.
I trust you are not in too much distress. —Captain Eric Moody, British Airways Flight 9

Great photo, thanks for sharing Tommy. That photo was probably taken about 6:00AM before any of the RON aircraft had left. During the day you would not be able to park like that, and it required a tremendous amount of cordination. For example the Eastern 727 at the bottom would not be able to depart until at least the USAir DC-9 left and possibly the Piedmont 733 also. Both the CO 733 and UA 727 could not leave either until both AA MD80's departed. Based on my memory here is where I believe most of the aircraft where departng to.
    AA MD80's ORD and RDU
    EA 727's FLL and MCO
    UA 727 ORD
CO 733 IAD (former New York Air hub)
    PI 733 BWI
    US DC-9 PIT
    US SH3 PHL and DCA

Note that even though Piedmont only had a few flights note the trademark Blue
airstairs and belt loader as Piedmont had their own ramp people. So did USAir, and they handled Eastern.

It is ironic that USAir had the most jet departures at ISP yet only 1 in the photo.
Tommy I would guess this was taken in 1988 or early 1989, US and PI merged in Aug 89 so it was before then

For those of you who don't know I was the Northeastern Station Manager at ISP for about 6 months in 1985, after Northeastern had restarted operations with a single leased UA 727-222, such memories.

    Cheers
