Saudi Arabian 777 Gear Emergency 11-28-09

As I sat down at the Wendy's near Firestone for a bite, I noticed a plane making rounds and dumping fuel in the distance. I took a couple pictures and it turned out to be a Saudi Arabian 777. It ended up landing on 31L and seems to have had an uneventful landing based on the planes that followed on the approach.

Note the left gear in both pictures.

See the 777 nose is way sexier than the A330/40 nose...and those pics show it...

Well, I got to see my first fuel dump! I was on Fire Island driving west on the causeway after visiting the lighthouse with the wife and kids. All of a sudden I see 2 thick contrails in formation over Captree Bridge making a turn NE'erly. Then I saw the 777 and said to my wife looks like someone is having trouble and heading back to JFK.

been a while since any of my ground school classes covered fuel dumping but maybe our two resident gas men can confirm it takes about 5000ft to vaporize. i'm pretty sure that's the number we were taught in ATC, will try to find and confirm the figure.
it is mathematically impossible for either hummingbirds, or helicopters to fly. fortunately, neither are aware of this.
