Harry situation: What if Reid loses?

What is actually worse is that Senator Schumer could be a possible replacement

    http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0909/27723.html

It’s a question few in the Senate will ask aloud but one that’s creeping into the chamber’s collective consciousness: What happens to Democrats if Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid really does get knocked off in the 2010 midterm elections?

Most of his fellow Democrats believe the Nevadan will pull out a win, avoiding the humiliation of ousted Democratic leader Tom Daschle of South Dakota in 2004. But privately, they’re looking ahead with some trepidation, imagining a Reid-less Senate that could be more chaotic and even more partisan than it is today.

“You’ve got people who ask, ‘What does Harry actually do around here?’ I say, ‘Just wait till he’s gone. You’ll see just what he did; how he held things together,’” says a Democratic insider with ties to the leader. “On the surface, it appears that all these guys have friendly relationships. But under the surface, there are people who really don’t like each other in the conference, and Harry keeps a lid on all of that.”

The two men who would almost certainly battle to succeed Reid — Sens. Dick Durbin of Illinois and Chuck Schumer of New York — are both more liberal and more forcefully partisan figures who would alter the Senate’s equilibrium in significant and unpredictable ways.

It doesn't look good for Reid IMO. The health care debacle is getting quite embarassing as well as the fact the Democratic congress is becoming laughable with only Pelosi being able to survive and get re-elected. Sue Lowden made it official today but it was common knowledge she was running. If she runs a good campaign she has a great chance to win. Just what Vegas needs a smart ex Miss New Jersey, Miss America contestant. Not to mention Rasmussen shows her 10 points ahead in a head to head match up with Reid! I love it! I am going to get a bottle of champange and pop the cork when Reid is finally gone. Bar at Penisula, everyone is invited.

I wouldn't mind if Schumer got the job. There's going to be a sh!t-ton of pork no matter what, better some more of it comes back to New York than flyover country.

Jon Stewart destroyed the Dems last night. Not a good sign when your loyalists start turning on you.

Yea but Stewart is a far left nut just like Michael Moore. Who also has been critical of Obama and the Dems lack of action. These people are not only insane but pretty small in #s. The Dems have bigger problems to worry about than this nobody trying to get ratings.

Agreed, but his points are still valid...the Dems ran on all these anti-war/pro-healthcare/pro-environment platforms and promised to do a ton of stuff if they were given a supermajority, and for better or for worse, they've done nothing.

I think a major part of that is the President's fault. On a few issues, including healthcare, he's basically told Congress to go do it on their own without giving them any direction. Of course they're not going to get anything done.

Matt these are empty campaign promises. Designed to get the votes needed to win. Do you really think he could just pull everyone out of Iraq and do all these things? They just were not possible. Obama new he had to really go nuts with the far left stuff to try to win because if it wasn't for McCain's terrible campaign he wouldn't have won. He can't be an anti-war president in these times as we are seeing Iran test the waters and terrorist groups starting in again. As for Congress they thought the far left stuff would fly but many in their party will lose in 2010' if they get on board. No matter what people want to think the majority of this country is right of center and not far left of center like John Stewart.

Actually I think Pelosi is the whole problem. I think Obama does want to tweak it and work together but Pelosi doesn't want to budge and doesn't want any part of the GOP. She really is quite evil and is turning out to be a terrible speaker of the house because her views are not even close the majority both Rep and Dem and it's showing as well.
