    Gov. Patterson Plays Race Card

    From today's NY Post:
ALBANY -- Gov. Paterson has played the race card.

The state's first black governor yesterday blamed his political woes -- and those of President Obama -- on a white-dominated media that he accused of taking part in an "orchestrated" attack campaign.

"We're not in the post-racial period," Paterson said in a freewheeling interview on the liberal talk-radio station WWRL. "My feeling is it's being orchestrated, it's a game, and people who pay attention know that."

"We don't have the kind of forces in the community that we had before, in other words, our black media outlets," the Democratic governor continued.

"Even our own reporters from our own community buy the public line, which is, 'We're going to get rid of David Paterson.' "

Paterson cited critical stories about his late-night partying at a Chelsea nightclub on the eve of a painful budget announcement as proof of the media's bias.

"The next victim on the list -- and you see it coming -- is President Barack Obama, who did nothing more than try to reform a health-care system . . . only because he's trying to make change," Paterson said.

Hours later, the governor tried to tone down his remarks in a statement. "What I did point out was that certain media outlets have engaged in coverage that exploits racial stereotypes," Paterson said. "That's not only unfair -- it's wrong -- and it sends an objectionable message."

Paterson has come under pressure to bow out of next year's election from labor groups and others who worry his historically low popularity could jeopardize the party's fortunes statewide.

The most formidable potential rival, state Attorney General Andrew Cuomo, outperforms Paterson in polls even among black voters.

"It's not the media going after him, it's members of his own party," said Baruch College political science professor Doug Muzzio. "The media has its faults, but to blame it for David Paterson's troubles and ascribe it to race, no way."

Paterson teed off on two media figures by name, accusing The Post's veteran State Editor Fredric Dicker, who is white, of attacking him "every single week."

He also took a shot at Dominic Carter, the African-American anchor of NY1's "Inside City Hall."

"I know he likes to ingratiate himself with folks, trying to beat up on elected officials from our community," Paterson said.

This only shows the utter desperation and lack of tact and class this sorry excuse for a politician is. Skin color has nothing to do with it, performance as a governor is what it's about. Patterson has done absolutely nothing to better the state of NY and it's not because he's an African American, it's more of a result of not knowing WTF he's doing. The same will apply to Obama in time.

Personally, I believe anybody, race or gender wise, is capable to run the state or nation for that matter. But just because you are who you are, it doesn't make you entitled automatically and it's high time we get over ourselves and be held accountable for our actions or non-actions.

I think he is screwing this state up even more, but in Patterson's defense... he was thrown into the position...

Please, he didn't have to accept the lieutenant governor's position and put himself one heartbeat (or hooker) away from the chief's seat.

Re: Gov. Patterson Plays Race Card

I don't think Patterson had any good cards to play really to begin with - no fault of his own - and by most accounts he is a good guy -but *now* he's made a very foolish choice (or is going into a meltdown) to suddenly play the race card. Its very unfortunate and Patterson now only has himself to blame -

Fred Dicker, working for the Post/Murdoch/Fox whatever would be a pit bull on any non-Republican in office - and often he was against Pataki as well.

Patterson's mention of NY1s Dominic Carter, is just as off base. Carter asks the all right and uncomfortable questions of all his interviewees - just as Andrew Kirtzman did before him, but to suggest Carter (an African American) is tough(er) on blacks than whites is ludicrous. If anything, by demeanor, he is very friendly with race hustler of the first order - Al Sharpton. But again, he does his job by asking the relevant questions, so its fairly immaterial if disconcerting.

I can only imagine Patterson must want a total pass from some "Ethnic" media source someplace that might pitch him only softball questions, but even here its difficult to determine what Patterson is getting at...

Is he really sorry that WLIB is functioning as Air America at the moment? Can he really not wait for the day it will return to the local urban hate fest radio it once was?

And, does the Amsterdam News not still exist? - founded by Percy Sutton, (Patrician of the Harlem Political Clubhouse along with Patterson's father Basil Patterson)? I suspect not all was harmonious within the Harlem Clubhouse and perhaps thats why David Patterson does not acknowledge that paper in his reference to no (African American he must really mean) ethnic media sources available, but the public face on the old Guard of Harlem (including Dinkins, Rangel etc) is always portrayed as a united front, so we are left to guess....

I believe Patterson is just melting down is all - its tough when your own party abandons you and the media herd follows the queue... they know they have Cuomo and would like Patterson to just get out of the way now. Meantime he's taking hits for his blindness and so on... No one said it was going to be easy or fair. It certainly is not either of those things. Patterson should already know this. I imagine he is playing his cards wrong if he wants that "graceful exit" to an Obama Adminstrative appointment to get out of the way for Cuomo.

    But we shall see....

If he doesn't get what he wants he could threaten to stay in a bruising primary against Cuomo that would theoretically elevate Guiliani's chances at the Governorship - so he might have some leverage, though its likely a bluff.

At this point I don't think it really matters what card he plays or what comes out of his mouth. He's a lame duck Gov that has no chance of being relected. He's become a laughing stock even in his own party and has lost total respect of New Yorkers.

Tommy is right, I think the WH even told him to shut up already. He is killing what is left of his political career even though it wasn't much to start with. Only reason we know him because Elliot got caught with his pants down. Get ready for Cuomo and mady Rudy who said he will decide within the next couple of months if he is going to make a run.
