    Don't they serve different roles?
Maybe, but it looks like LA County wanted it for the same role - lugging water (read: heavy) to fires. Cruise speed probably doesn't matter much, more the ability to take 2800lbs of water to where it needs to be. That being said, the 139 does have a huge cabin. For some reason, it always re-impresses me when I see the seats lined up 4-abreast.

it is mathematically impossible for either hummingbirds, or helicopters to fly. fortunately, neither are aware of this.

    I have to respectfully disagree.
    The two Hueys I remembered were Aviation 8 and 9. # 9 had pontoons then # 9 became a
hangar queen and its parts used for # 8. Before being retired they put the pontoons on # 8. # 8
worked for awhile alongside Aviation 12 then it too was retired when # 14 came in to service.
Maybe someone can confirm but I believe # 8 was donated to Aviation High School in Queens and used
    for teaching purposes.
And yes they were great ships!!
I would love to see the pontoons on one of the 412s. :D

It probably was 8 or 9. It was a long time ago when I flew in them. I could have sworn it was 14 but I was too busy with the patient to really look.

That was Aviation 2. In July of 1992 they were practicing an autorotation at Floyd Bennett and came down too hard/fast and
flattened the skids and severed the tail boom. Both officers on board were injured (one medevaced by USCG to Bellevue) and
that was it for the 105. Too bad as I really liked that ship. But watching some past autos being practiced there using the 105
I cant say I was totally surprised.

Anyone remember the EPA Huey that used to fly around the area taking water samples?
They had pontoons also. Now they fly a TwinStar though I havent seen them in awhile.
