The three most common expressions in aviation are, "Why is it doing that?", "Where are we?" and "Oh Crap".
For what it is worth if you have a car or access to one it would be much easier to drive Jones Beach. If you take mass transit from the Bronx it would involve either the subway or a bus down to Penn Station. Then the LIRR out to Freeport (Holiday schedule, usually every hour) then a MSBA Bus shuttle down to the beach. I would say 3 1/2 to 4 hour trip.
Even if you are as far north as Riverdale you could leave at 7:00AM and be at Jones Beach by 8:00AM-8:15AM driving in regular weekend traffic.

I dont think the wantaugh parkway charges any tolls (99.9% sure).B ut when I went to the airshow in 07' I got there at 6:30AM and I went up to the both and they guy said I have to get a ticket, so I had to turn around and buy one....you cant just go to the parking both and give the guy 8 bucks (well from 07 at least). That why I just get the season pass its good for the whole summer and makes airshow day ten times easier.Originally Posted by moose135

or you can just stay out all night after History Under the Stars and catch a ride to the beach at like 4am. Moose says it best, you can sleep when your dead.

Last couple of years I paid directly at the parking lot. One thing is for sure I will leave much earlier this year than last. Got caught in a
nasty jam on the Wantagh last year. Watched the warbirds flyover as I drove towards JB.

I live about a good 20 to 30 mins away from the beach and I get there by 6:45 am and the first two lots start filling up.....They estimate 100,000 people a day.....you should get there very early....on the sunday show Rob was telling people over the readio (they were streaming the airshow over a local AM station) not to come because it was full !
Of course if they have the Friday dress rehearsal you can avoid all of that. :)

What lot? And yes you should leave early they are still doing construction and I can imagine those delays could get quite nasty.

Not that I would recommend it to others, but the last two years, I rolled up to the toll booth at around 9am (I paid there, not at the parking lot), had about 3 cars in line ahead of me waiting to pay, and parked in the lot across from the water tower (not the beach side) - the lot was less than 1/2 full when I got there. I found a spot on the boardwalk at show center and shot from there.

Yeah, also if worse comes to worse people could park in the theater parking lot. And I forgot about the toll booth.Originally Posted by moose135

they usually shut down the beach and have 3+miles of backups as of around 10:30-11pm...I would not recommend what Moose did, even tho it was probably the best airshow luck you will hear. I hear countless other storys of people who had to turn around.
If you are so worried about it...you should NOT go sat or sun but you should go to the practice on Friday where the beach is completely empty.

The Jones Beach Theater lot. Parked in the back near the FD/PD Staging Area.
Yeah that was pure luck.Originally Posted by Derf

If I remember correctly the T-Birds often practice on Thursday and take Friday off depending on the venue. Either way the practice shows are the way to go if you can get there to watch & shoot.

sorry, your a little off. Practice is never on Thurs but Friday and is the only Practice. It has been that way for the last 3 years. I know because I was always on the field on Thurs and Fri. I went with a co-worker to the beach on Friday and had a blast.Originally Posted by fk6065
