A digital photo-archiving company headquartered in Seattle shut down abruptly this week, setting off a race for many independent photographers to recover thousands of images stored on the company's servers before they become permanently inaccessible.

The abrupt closure of Pioneer Square-based Digital Railroad Inc. on Tuesday also left photographers wondering whether they'll be paid for sales of their images through that company.
