Worth it to plan a trip to fly NWA DC-9?

I'm going out to ICT in June and in looking at flights I have the chance to connect in DTW on the return trip to fly on a DC-9. Is it really that special/cool? The last time I flew a DC-9 was with TWA from JFK to somewhere in southern FL, and I don't remember.

You guys think I should go for it--or go for the slightly cheaper option? I always read on a.net about people scrambling to get on NWA's DC-9 flights...

I would do it if I were you, the DC9 is a nice aircraft, having flown DTW-IAD RT on the DC9-50 and -30 I can say it was worth it.

The DC9 is old, it definitely wont have any entertainment on it. But yeah, they're going to be phased out within the next few years...

The combination of the DL-NW merger, the price of fuel, the DC-9's thirst for fuel, and the fact that a combined DL-NW would want to reduce domestic capacity all could contribute to make their retirement more likely within the next year, not years.

If you really want to ride a 9 one last time go for it, 20 years from now you will probably be really glad if you did and really sorry if you didn't.

OK so I booked the trip--LGA-MEM-ICT-DTW-JFK on NW.

This trip will have several firsts for me: first time flying NWA, first time in MEM and DTW, and first time on a DC9-40. I'm excited to get to fly NW before the merge!

Have a great time! I have only flown on the 717, which is kinda close, but no cigar! I would love to fly a DC-9, but can't afford the trip.

Good for you, planning a DC-9 mileage run. I say it's worth it, I did it last year and recorded each flight on video. There's nothing like the roar of the Diesel 9 and you won't be sorry you did it in a few years when they're gone. Make sure you sit at least two rows from the back, this way you get a window view near the engines

MEM isn't a bad little airport....you will feel like you walked into the 1970s though, LOL. Good BBQ places to eat in the airport. Enjoy!

Tommy you are so right about MEM, it's like travelling through time LOL! The new terminal at DTW is beautiful though.

RDU- If you don't mind my asking, how much is this MR going to cost you? I paid about $270 for JFK-DTW-MEM-BNA-DTW-JFK on 1 319, 2 D93's, and 2 D95's.

Cost me $295 but I am sticking around ICT for the weekend so its worth the price (I guess, after all it is Wichita!)

Yeah, the DC-9 is a great airplane, my personal favorite. Make sure to get seats in the back (although not the last 2 rows, they don't have windows)
    nwa FOREVER!
