Earlier this week, I had a young girl, in kindergarten, came into the office.
6 years old.
While in school, she reached to get a puzzle box on a shelf. Once she got hold of the box, several scissors sitting atop the box came crashing down on the girl and on her face.
The girl felt fine though. She wasn't even tearing nor was her eye red. No scratches on her face at all. But as a precaution, the nurse sent her home and mom brought her in.
And I saw this and it nearly knocked me out of my seat:
A photo taken from our biomicroscope camera reveals multiple scratches. The longest one is 4.5 mm long.
Same eye but shown with a cobalt blue filter. And I zoomed out to show 5 scratches.
What's amazing is that I've seen several grown men come into this office over the years with one or two scratches in the eye and they were crying, screaming in pain. This little girl was truly a trooper! Both her mother and I were in awe. it looked like Freddy Krueger scratched her!
24 hours later, after a therapeutic lens and medication, here is the same eye. You can see a very faint residual area of scar which will disappear today. Another day at the office but wow, what a tough little girl!
