The Cl-44 Loftleiders were amongst my favorites as well, back in the late 60s/early 70s.

Other favorites included RAF VC-10s, British Caledonian 707s, TAP 707s, Aer Lingus 747-100s, and National 747-100s and basically all the IL-62s we used to get.. LOT, Aeroflot, CSA, Tarom and later, Ukraine (in the 90s).

I wasn't really out at the airport too much in the Mid/late 70s, but I can remember Pilgrim and Suburban using Dehavilland Twin Otters to JFK (and was that the fixed wing aircraft New York Airways used for a bit as well?). As for Herons, I can't recall seeing any at JFK - but Allegheny Commuter was all over the Eastern US as I recall. Did Prinair (Puerto Rico) ever come to JFK? They had Herons as well.

Never did get to see Interflug IL-62s either..but did see a 4 engine prop come in just after dark to the IAB one year.. and could only make out the word "flug" so presumably Interflug or Sudflug - If it was Sudflug, I presume it was a DC-7, but had not considered Interflug. If so, that would've made it an IL-18! At any rate, entirely "unscheduled" in that particular case.

Not a great scan from a slide, but I did shoot one of the Pilgrim Otters, circa 1981, landing at JFK:

Yes, there there were at least two Twin Otters in that operation (as well as a couple of single engine Seaplanes). That outfit had its own floating dock (with a trailer with an attendant) adjacent to the DownTown Wall Street Heliport and they flew to both Philadelphia and Washington DC. The name I can clearly recall was "DownTown Airlines" and the titles as well, although they also went under another name for a bit as well.

Not to be confused with the old barge a couple of piers away, with no signs/attendants that hosted seaplanes from NJ and LI not unlike the 23rd street boat basin Marina does still.... Sadly no seaplane operations on lower East River these days with the exception of the 1-time Dornier tour aircraft that visited Battery Park a couple years back.
