The new police cars in Washington have this type of siren. It sounds like a low-frequency chopping sound, and is very audible over background city noise. Apparently, one of the considerations in adding this type of siren is that deaf people can feel the vibrations (DC has one of the largest deaf populations in North America, thanks to Gallaudet University), and react appropriately. The way I've seen it used so far is that they use the standard sirens, and the bass one only when going through an intersection, or swerving around another car.Originally Posted by Alex T
