Marines Say They Were Not Allowed In Terminal

HONOLULU -- Controversy is brewing over the way some U.S. Marines from Kaneohe were treated when they flew home from the war in Iraq.

The Kaneohe Marines were making the long trip back from Iraq last week. Some of them say they were made to feel unwelcome on U.S. soil.

    ...

The Marines said that when they made a fuel stop in Oakland, the Marines were not allowed in the terminal and were forced to remain 400 yards from the terminal near the baggage trailers. More...
Story includes sexy World DC-10 landing video. :borat:

This makes me sick. Those men and women are fighting for us in some of the worst conditions and always have that chance of death a split second away. The airport Supervisor or whoever is in charge of transient visitation should have recognized that these people are the reason he is able to speak freely.

Unreal... You spend 12-15 months in the sand box defending your country, you avoid getting killed, you see some of your best friends die, and you finally make it home only to be **** on... Who are these people running the passenger terminal in OAKl?? Probably the same people who complained about the Blue Angels' air show over San Fran... Can we get some real Americans with some common sense in there?

Apparently World Airways dropped a ball in this as well. So, it's technically their fault. OAK's staff just compounded the problem. Still, it baffles the mind.

Airport found legitimate in troop treatment

The Oakland International Airport did not break any laws or regulations when it denied 200 Marines and soldiers access to the passenger terminal during a layover last year from Iraq to the troops' home base in Hawaii, the Transportation Department says. Read more...

I'm sure they broke no laws, except maybe the most important one of common sense...

Re: Marines Miffed At Airport Mistreatment

Airport officials were concerned that the flight's ground staff could not provide "an adequate level of escort and control of such a large group of military personnel in or around the terminal area," the inspector's report said.
Because they were going to play around at the airport? Can someone answer why if it's these men and women's jobs to PROTECT airports in Iraq that they would just go and mess around with OAK?
