JFK to EWR by car ?

    Hi all,

I hope it is ok to post this message here. I'll be flying out to JFK from DUS tomorrow and be arriving in the evening. I'm going to stay at EWR at the Holiday Inn Hotel. I'll have a rental car - but what I don't have and cannot really find is a good explanation how to drive from JFK to EWR - can someone help me out ? All I could find was descriptions how to connect as a pax with busses...but I would need the driving description.

thanks in advance for any help !

    EDIT : found something

    @ Winglets 747 :

Thanks for the link, I didn't know this site.

@ all : I have now two different routes from two different sites, which use different directions, for example the one suggest to drive through Manhatten - I guess this is not a good idea ?

attached are the two routes (map), which one would you chose ?

The "Mapquest" site mentions a tollway at I-278w and I-95N - does anybody know how high the toll is for the route ?

    thanks so much,

    greets

I go through Staten Island, its much easier. Also ensure you have some cash, because its about $14(not 100%, but its about that) for the bridge tolls(these states are such crooks)

I agree, going through Staten Island to the Belt Pkwy East is more direct and faster (hopefully there wont be traffic).

Yeah, the few times we went to EWR from Baldwin Harbor (Where I used to live) we always went through Staten Island.

Belt Parkway WEST, follow signs for Verrazano Bridge.
Over the Verrazano, onto Staten Island Expressway/278 WEST, follow signs for Goethals Bridge.
Over the Goethals, follow signs for New Jersey Turnpike NORTH. Exit 14 (NOT 13A), and follow the signs.

You always pay to leave New Jersey (and to enter Staten Island), so you pay the Verrazano toll ($9), but not the Goethals ($6). The turnpike should be about $1.

Don't go through Manhattan under any circumstances.

[Edit, whoops - yeah, it should all say East. The Verrazano is $9, westbound only - the Goethals is $6, eastbound only]

NO No, follow my directions above for EWR to JFK, you got them wrong the way you typed them. I would bring 20-25 dollars for tolls. The Goethels Bridge toll I believe is 8-9 dollars when you head to JFK only. The Verrazano Bridge toll is paid when you head back to EWR only and it costs 9 dollars. I dont know about the NJ Turnpike toll.

As for the Belt Pkwy, you head on it east when you drive to JFK and west when driving back from JFK.

    Tamon --

Remember to stay in your left lane on the Verrazano to go on the Belt Parkway EAST to JFK..

(that other route to take the Belt WEST from the Verrazano Bridge is really idiotic).

    Hi Tom,

thanks. I am now finally at the Holiday Inn in EWR after a good 1hr 30 minutes drive...It's not really easy to drive around JFK when it's dark but I am more than happy that I made it...

the toll was less than expected, 9 dollars for the big bridge to Staten Island and 45 cents for Staten Island to New Jersey...

    thanks for the help guys
