I just finished watching The Departed and also watched Babel today and I have come to the conclusion that The Departed really should not have one the Oscar for best movie of the year.
Thoughts?

Well, it is an awards show. It's all political.
Martin Scorcese should've won Best Picture or Best Director a long time ago, but in all of those years, the Academy was busy rewarding someone else, (whether because there were two or three "great" films that particular year, or catching up on rewarding someone else overlooked previously - I haven't checked in those particular instances) so now it is "his time". :)

Scorsese is a brilliant man who's work should have been recognized years ago. While the departed may not have been the best work he has done I feel these awards represent the past work he's produced.
The Departed was a movie that I really enjoyed. The ending was a little disappointing (in temrs of outcome, not that it was bad, but I found it to be very suspenseful and entertaining. One of the best new movies I've seen in a few years.
Though I never saw it, the previews for Babel looked stupid to me, as though it was a Middle Eastern attempt tp recreate Crash. I'd have a hard time imagining it being good.

I have to comepletely disagree. I was watching both of those moves in fact yesterday as well and the Departed slotted up into my number two favorite movie of all time. GREAT flick!Originally Posted by Iberia A340-600

I enjoy the Departed. I agree with Phil that the ending was disappointing, and as usual, Damon's girlfriend in the film was unnecessary and slowed the film down. But Scorsese deserves a best picture oscar, and its about time he got one.
Kind of like why Peytom Manning got the MVP in the Super Bowl. His performance wasn't great, but finally he got the praise he deserved despite not getting the chance.

I can understand what you guys are saying Scorcese and that he needed to win an Oscar along time ago. And maybe it was just the ending like Phil and RDU have mentioned that turned me off from the movie. It could also have been that I had just seen Babel, which is slightly like Crash like Phil said, and then again maybe it was just that I really loved Little Miss Sunshine.
The Departed was the only Best Picture nominee I saw, so I'm not sure if it deserved to win. While it's a great movie, it wasn't one of Scorcese's best efforts, maybe in his top 5. It's too bad he won for this and not one of his better films.
I saw Little Miss Sunshine the other day, which won a couple of Oscars. It reaffirmed my belief that people love to heap praise on movies just because they are quirky or different even if they're not very good.

I agree Ryan. The Departed was probably the best movie I had seen in like 6 years. I think it's my #2 as well now.
I have only seen part of the Departed, & so far it seems to be ok.
Now, I did see Babel, & I did not think that the movie was very good, they wasted the talent of Cate Blanchett, all she did was moan & groan on her back, oh, & she pee in a pan. Brad Pitt was showed that he is just not a good actor. But, the Japanese chick from the movie was great, she made you believe that she was a Japanese High School Deaf Mute.
