Just out of interest - does anyone, in regular spotting photography use any filters like a UV or something like that?

Yes, i have a UV filter for my Lumix FZ-30. I just got it and cant wait to try it out spotting on Sunday.
i use a UV Haze-1 filter on most of my lenses. it's cheap, and it saved my lens once already when i got sandblasted by a longranger.
it is mathematically impossible for either hummingbirds, or helicopters to fly. fortunately, neither are aware of this.
I have a polarizing filter for me 100-400mm. I lov ethe effect it has on the clouds.
I got the following rejected on Anet for badcontrast and exposure. The thing is that it's not overexposed, it's just hte effect that the filter has. The plane is still properly exposed.

Though I like the effect, it's not useful or practical for me to use for much.

I've been looking at alot of older color images lately (non aviation for the most part), but anyway I do miss the "feel" of some of that stuff.
In fact, just before the DSLR explosion, there were a number of people shooting with various Fuji print films - and sometimes the polarizers can kind of remind me of that.

A filter will protect your camera from accidental scratches, or fingerprints. It is worth paying the $30-$50 bucks for a decent UV filter.
nwa FOREVER!
Thanks for the info everyone!
