I like them as well Moose, I have been on the endless pursuit to try and tone down my Halo's. Here are way to many of my HDR's from the airshow.

There are so many to show different lighting conditions of shooting, all were done
manually to my taste. Remember, there is no right an wrong in an HDR, it is only
how well you can get the feel you are looking for. I try to stay away from cartoony
look yet love the look....Go Figure!

    Re: HDR, anyone else play?

VERY cool thread. I'm new on the site, and have been very inspired by the photos and images posted here. Though I'm a well-seasoned Photoshop user (almost 20 yrs with it), I had never looked into trying HDR before. So I've done some research on it - both here, and elsewhere.

    -------
Disclaimer: I've always been a point and shoot kind of photographer (I'm a pro graphic artist, not photographer), but I'm starting to make my way around the "manual" settings much more. So please excuse my lack of technical knowledge on the camera end of the project. Exposure, Aperture, ISO, F-stop, Bus stops... Agggghhh!
    -------

So far, my initial tests have - not surprisingly - been underwhelming, to say the least. When I tried to do a quick experiment, I shot 3 exposures and used the Merge to HDR function in photoshop. The resulting image looked not a lot different than the "standard" exposure shot. What the heck is wrong?

Then I decided to use my photoshop layering knowledge to "fake" an HDR - using Adjustments and layer masking. Here, I got decent results. But I was hoping to use the HDR stuff directly.

The other thing I've tried is the Tone Mapping filter (Photomatix) as I think the surreal image "look" is VERY intriguing! This, too, was very disappointing! I had a GREAT looking preview shot and accepted the settings. When it finished processing, the final image looked horrible!!! Not only was it a lousy conversion, it bared no resemblance to the image in the Preview window! Uggghhh!!

Can anyone please give me some basic pointers to get me on the right track? Thanks in advance...

it is mathematically impossible for either hummingbirds, or helicopters to fly. fortunately, neither are aware of this.

thanks Fred! I just wish i had more time to steady the camera, the large (very large) version shows quite a bit of ghosting and also turns up some color fringing with some artifacts....maybe in another edit I'll be able to save it!

Just an example of how well tone mapping can work

    before tone mapping

    and after tone mapping

As you can see..... tone mapping really brings out a lot of hidden details! :borat:

Great work Fred...you must have used the newest version of Photomatix. I heard it was very powerful, but wow!
