Mel Gibson's anti-Semitic comments could end career

So he did. He not only got pulled over for DUI at 2:30 a.m. on Friday after driving more than 80 mph, he became belligerent with the arresting officers, tried to flee to his car and had to be handcuffed, then yelled, “I own Malibu!” and “You’re going to regret you ever did this to me!”

But his anti-Semitic remarks really set this apart from the usual formulaic Hollywood busts. He allegedly said, “The Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world” and then asked a deputy, “Are you a Jew!?"

My brother sent me this link last night. Subsequently, his away message read the following the rest of the night: "Mel Gibson hates Jews more than George Bush hates black people."

MEL SAYS SORRY TO THE JEWS
    Tue Aug 01 2006 11:10:45 ET

August 2, 2006 -- There is no excuse, nor should there be any tolerance, for anyone who thinks or expresses any kind of Anti-Semitic remark. I want to apologize specifically to everyone in the Jewish community for the vitriolic and harmful words that I said to a law enforcement officer the night I was arrested on a DUI charge.

I am a public person, and when I say something, either articulated and thought out, or blurted out in a moment of insanity, my words carry weight in the public arena. As a result, I must assume personal responsibility for my words and apologize directly to those who have been hurt and offended by those words.

The tenets of what I profess to believe necessitate that I exercise charity and tolerance as a way of life. Every human being is God’s child, and if I wish to honor my God I have to honor his children. But please know from my heart that I am not an anti-Semite. I am not a bigot. Hatred of any kind goes against my faith.

I’m not just asking for forgiveness. I would like to take it one step further, and meet with leaders in the Jewish community, with whom I can have a one on one discussion to discern the appropriate path for healing.

I have begun an ongoing program of recovery and what I am now realizing is that I cannot do it alone. I am in the process of understanding where those vicious words came from during that drunken display, and I am asking the Jewish community, whom I have personally offended, to help me on my journey through recovery. Again, I am reaching out to the Jewish community for its help. I know there will be many in that community who will want nothing to do with me, and that would be understandable. But I pray that that door is not forever closed.

This is not about a film. Nor is it about artistic license. This is about real life and recognizing the consequences hurtful words can have. It’s about existing in harmony in a world that seems to have gone mad.

    END

You oughta marry someone named Gibson so you too can be Mel Gibson. My suggestion:

Tyrese Gibson, star of such classic films as Waist Deep and Baby Boy.

ABC pulls Mel Gibson Holocaust miniseries-WSJ
    Tue Aug 1, 2006 3:19 AM ET

NEW YORK, Aug 1 (Reuters) - ABC Television Network pulled a miniseries about the Holocaust it was developing with Mel Gibson's production company, the Wall Street Journal reported on Tuesday, quoting an unidentified representative for the network.

Gibson was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving early on Friday and was reported to have launched into a tirade against Jews, asking the arresting officer if he was a Jew and blaming the Jews for starting all wars.

The actor, who holds strong conservative Catholic religious and political views and whose father is a Holocaust denier, apologized on Saturday.

The incident has raised questions about the future of projects Gibson and his Icon Productions company are working on, like the ABC television miniseries based on a memoir about a Dutch Jew during World War II, the newspaper said.

An ABC representative told the paper, without elaborating, it has been two years and the network still has not seen a script, so the project is being pulled.

A spokesperson for ABC, which is owned by Walt Disney Co. <DIS.N>, could not be reached for comment.

I think this is getting way blown out of proportion. Mel seemed to be a little intoxicated and was probably pissed he was getting thrown in the can and being given a break from the PD. Any of his outburst can't really be taken seriously and I don't think his career will suffer. His written apology was mostly PR and I think the press should stop stroking this already. I doubt Mel is a over blown anti-Semite.

I highly doubt this will end his career, he'll pull the whole PR thing and come back stronger then ever. While whatever he said was wrong the real issue was he was driving drunk and could have killed someone. Charge him, convict him and sentence him. Enough with this media bull****, next please.

The guy's personal take from The Passion will eventually add up to about $1 BILLION (yes with a B). Nobody is going to say no to him.
