    ISP

Sen. Charles Schumer has asked the U.S. Attorney General's office to investigate the reported misallocation of at least $65 million in federal grants in an expansion at MacArthur Airport in Ronkonkoma.

Schumer sent a letter to Roslynn R. Mauskopf, U.S. attorney general for the Eastern District of New York, asking for an investigation to determine whether the money is being spent properly.

In an interview Sunday, Schumer said he wants an explanation for the financial situation at the airport.

The request comes as Newsday reported that federal, state and Islip town records show that $65.2 million in public money is being spent to fund the expansion, despite promises the project wouldn't cost local taxpayers anything

McGowan really screwed the pooch on this one! No wonder why WN threw the terminal up as quickly as they did. They have the sweetest deal in the world at ISP, rent free! Its going to be interesting to see how this plays out.

I read something last week about how fire officials are saying the new terminal is essentially a tinderbox just waiting to kill a bunch of people.

AP Story today about Schumer, fire hazards:

Senator Calls For Federal Probe Of Airport Spending

    POSTED: 11:18 am EDT June 26, 2006

RONKONKOMA, N.Y. -- Federal authorities should investigate the reported misallocation of at least $65 million in federal grants to expand the Southwest Airlines terminal at Long Island MacArthur Airport, says Sen. Charles Schumer.

"Tens of millions of dollars are being wasted, and we need to find out why this occurred," Schumer told Newsday in Monday's editions. "If there was ever a time for federal investigation, it's right now."

The senator said he sent a letter to the United States attorney in Brooklyn, requesting an investigation to determine whether the money was being spent properly.

Newsday, citing federal, state and Islip town records, has reported that $65.2 million in public money was spent to fund the expansion since 2000, despite promises to local taxpayers that they would not pay a cent. The bulk of the federal funds were spent on roadway and terminal improvements at the airport, the newspaper said.

The deals were largely brokered by former Islip Town Supervisor Peter McGowan, who pleaded guilty earlier this year to stealing campaign money and taking campaign kickbacks in deals unrelated to the airport. The terminal concourse at MacArthur was named after McGowan, but the Islip Town Board voted to remove his name from the facility following the guilty plea. McGowan is currently serving a 90-day term in the Suffolk County Jail.

A telephone call to the U.S. attorney's office for comment on Monday was not immediately returned.

Last week, Suffolk County District Attorney Thomas Spota said his office had uncovered serious fire hazards that could cause an explosion in the terminal.

An inspection found that sprinklers, rather than a chemical fire-suppression system, had been installed in the terminal's main electrical control room. The DA said water could cause electricity to arc, sparking an explosion.

Inspectors also found that sprinklers above the main entrance to the airport had been disconnected.

The newspaper also reported that outside the terminal, natural gas pipes have been placed underneath air conditioning intake manifolds. If there were a gas leak, natural gas could get pulled into the new terminal's main ventilation system, officials said.

Town officials have said they are cooperating with Spota's investigation. A Southwest spokeswoman said the airline would conduct its own review of the problems.

Since the terminal's expansion, the number of passengers flying Southwest at MacArthur has climbed every year since 1999. In 2005, more than 900,000 Southwest passengers used the airport, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation.
