a tale, and perhaps a sale, of 2 lenses

back in 2001, I got a canon rebel film and with it, I got 2 lenses:

    -canon zoom EF 28-80 f3.5-5.6

-canon zoom EF 80-200 f4.5-5.6 II

more recently, I got the 20D with a 100-400 and as you know, I love the quality.

so as you know, neither of hte EF lenses are high end lenses. But lately I've been thinking of selling these 2 and getting a new lens to cover me a bit on the lower end, lower than 28, but with a bit of zoom.

24-70 f/2.8L Is this a decent way to go? Any other options? i am trying to avoid a fixed focal length but will consider it.

    cheers!

I KNOW that you should go out today and buy a 50MM 1.8 for like $70.00. It is great for lowlight and you will not take it off when the camera when shooting night or indoors! FACT!

After you do that, then look for a nice walk around lens. I like your choice.

Here is a TRULY GREAT LINK!!!!

I found them just fine...the 28-80MM is under "Zoom Lens 2"
and the 80-200 f4.5-5.6 II is under "Zoom Lens 4"

for the BEST LENS REVIEW on almost ALL Canon Len's....
    http://www.photozone.de/8Reviews/index.html

You will look at the reviews and be able to decide for yourself, the proper balance in quality...Price....
FYI, The Lens Considered Canons best is the 70-200 and sets the standard for all zoom lens's.... They now have a consumer $600 70-300IS lens that is almost the same quality of image with "THREE STOPS" saved by the IS. It is a marvel of modern lens's from what I have seen. GREAT for a Cheap lens!

    I think there are 3 important len's

    Nice zoom
    Nice walk around lens
and a nice low light portrait lens!!!

The zoom and portrait lens get all the use!

I haven't upgraded any of the lenses yet to IS or L (and probably won't for a while), but the 75-300 USM II 4/5.6, 28-105 3.5/4.5, and the 20/2.8 have served me very, very well for 8+ years now. The middle one, especially, is a perfect walking-around lens.

I have a 24-70mm 2.8 (Sigma though), and though it's a great lens, it often leaves me disappointed with it being close...but not close enough to compete with others who have lenses smaller than 24mm.

figure what kind of shots you're looking to get and figure out if 24mm is close enough for you.

thanks Fred for letting have a look at hte 50 mm.

while its a great lens, Mateo hit it on the head as I am looking a walk around lens.

In retrospect I might stay with the 28-80mm and call it a day.

    We'll see!

Mario take a look at Sigma's 18-125 3.5 DC series lens. I have it for my Canon and it makes a great walk around lens and the quality is fantastic.
