    AA and WN report performance

American Airlines and Southwest Airlines today reported their fourth quarter and 2005 performance. American reported a fourth quarter loss of 604 million while Southwest reported net income of 86 million. For the year American lost 861 million while Southwest reported record earnings of 548 million for 2005.

American ended 2005 with 4.3 billion in cash and Southwest ended 2005 with 2.1 billion in cash.

American announced that it was permanently grounded 27 MD-80 aircraft and continues to adjust its schedule and look at all areas of the business to increase revenue. Southwest said it will add 30 new aircraft to its fleet and said any new cities will be determined based on current service needs of its existing destinations.
