Ever get stopped by a Police Boat??? I did!

I was out by the Marina by LGA and was taking some shots of aircraft last night

When I saw this out in the distance

He pulled up and stopped and watched me for about 15 minutes

Then it looked like he was starting to continue on his way.

but then he pulled into the harbor and questioned one of the small motor
boats that was riding next to the students learning to race. I watched as
he pulled in and tied up. He questioned me and quickly took my licence.
He was kind yet gave me the "After Sept 11th, it is illegal to shoot aircraft"
line, Then he told me that he had to hold me until homeland security
told him what to do.... He also said that I should be in handcuffs. I took
many pictures but this was the bordem shot while they had my ID
Boy did he get mad when he heard the shuttler clap...."NO MORE
    PHOTOS"!

He also asked if he could see the shots of the boat that I took

I have a ton of pictures and more to show...but it is late and I am tired...sorry

oh man do i have a good one... damit!! promised people i would'nt down the NYPD. oooh!!

although it is kinda funny that the boat crew took the time to actually moor to a pier to come and question you, then gave you the usual un-educated banter about aviation photography.
it is mathematically impossible for either hummingbirds, or helicopters to fly. fortunately, neither are aware of this.

That there is the famous dock.

I've been on it many times taking photos while the police boat passes. I guess that's another thing that I'll have to worry about now, huh?

I love the "ilegal to take pictures of planes" crap... So if terrorist used a hot dog stand for an attack...that means no taking pictures of hot dog stands.. But who in the first place would be doing that??? Same with cars, boats, trains, houses, buildings, blimps, cats & dogs, fish, computers, drains, curbs, streets..... think ill stop now ;) They should really be focusing on how to stop people from dumping junk in the water...that oil looks real nice

I kept biting my lip or I would have been arrested....I kept hearing things
like "You should be in handcuffs right now but you are being a
gentlman", "It is illegal to take photos of aircraft here", "You should have
just left and that would have been it, but you stayed when we pulled up!"

I LOVE THAT ONE! I SHOULD HAVE LEFT! I told him "If I was doing
nothing illegal, why should I leave? Then would you not want to call
ground units to intercept to find out why I was running?" DUH!!! I should
have left....ahahahahah That was the funniest statement!

In the 8MP version I have, you can clearly see what I saw in the
eyepiece..... The officer on the right looking directly at me

They did do lots of things right, I just do not like when the Police make
up their own laws to move you along. I was talking to one officer and
told them how much I dislike when officers make up laws to scare people
off and I knew the laws and what I can and can not do....then the other
officer came out of the boat and started ranting about how what I was
doing was illegal! It was hysterical to see the look on the other officers
face, he was trying to hold back a heavy laugh...trying really hard!

    Here is a close up

I covered the face of the officer, the guy on the left started asking me
the questions, the guy on the right was handling the small boat violations.
The other officer stayed on the boat....he was a very nice guy.

All in all, it was professional...the only thing that I have a problem with is
the same thing we all complain about, the Officers making up laws
to keep us from coming back, but it is the best spot I ever found and I
    will be back.

YOU CAN SIT IN A LAWN CHAIR BEHIND THE GAS PUMPS DRINKING
BEERS WITH YOUR CAMERA ON THE TABLE AS THE AIRCRAFT PASS BY!
BEST SPOT!!!!! The person who runs the mini store/Boat gas pump is a
VERY COOL DUDE! The best part is that every beer is ICE cold!

How come MILLIONS of people take pictures of planes, MILITARY ones, at airshows and it is perfectly OK? This is really silly.. BUT, I do like educating directly or indirectly (Port Authority telling my officer it was cool, Homeland telling yours, etc.)

I have been in the Marina parking lot shooting AT THE PLANES with my big lens, monopod and all, for hours, IN FRONT OF an RMP while they ate lunch or took a break.

Really, if the officers had just called their precinct, their captain would have told them it was cool...

Anyway, those guys are just doing their jobs, regardless of us thinking they are wrong or what not... Not everyone shares our knowledge. I am SURE if I went to one of these officer's houses and saw they way they practice safe computing (or not) I would hold them in handcuffs as well

As long as my rights are not violated, all I get out of it is a missed opporttunity to shoot yet another JetBlue LOL or an US Air or Conti at LGA lol...

It was on the east side of the boardwalk as you pass the gate it is to your right. The Beer was Ice cold and it was just soo nice it seemed soo wrong.

One of these days you have to tell me when you are going there. You will love the conversation that will go on.

One of these days we should have a spotting tail gate party over there..........bring your tripods, have the video of "Top Gun" playing, etc., free brochures on plane spotting to inform the public of what plane spotting is, etc.., and maybe a special guest appearance by Al Roker!

I would love to turn around the old cop line on them..... "We need to check with Homeland Security", "but I am ...."
