    KLGA signage

just in case you were wondering, PORT has replaced the shrubbery 'LGA' along the perimeter road at the end of runway 22. they've also greatly increased the overrun pad at the end of the runway.
it is mathematically impossible for either hummingbirds, or helicopters to fly. fortunately, neither are aware of this.

I knew they tore up the LGA topiary a while ago, but I thought they replaced it with a new one.

The 'overrun pad' has been there for a few months, it's one of the two permanent arrestor beds that have been/are being installed. The installation of one at the end of 31 is actually why 13/31 has been closed every weekend.

I think it's at the end of 13, not at the end of 31.

    No, Phil...think about it.

It's at the end of 31, aka the beginning of 13.

You could be right, but I'm pretty sure if was made for aborted 13 departures to be caught.

only the end of 13 had the space....that hill and patch of grass to do it. The end of 31 had no space, and they'd had to have built an extension of the pier.

At least, that's an explanation of why I thought it was at the end of 13.

Ummm....no, you think about it. The "end" of 31 (i.e., the beginning of 13) is on a pier. What good would it be if the arrestor bed crumpled and sent the plane straight into the water?

While I have not seen any construction (because I have not had occasion to fly out of LGA recently), I'd be willing to bet that the arrestor bed is being completed on the eastern edge of the airport, right where planes would turn onto 31 for departure.

As Phil said, this arrestor bed is clearly being built for aborted deps (and, I suppose, landings where there is a problem) on 13.

Both ends of the that runway have had overruns. The Continental MD80 off the end of 13 and the US 737(-400?) off the end of 31. Both were aborted departures.

LGA's other crashes/incidents occured on 13 heading movements (USAir 405 was departing 13, and the Delta MD80 was landing on 13).

Thank goodness there have never been any aborted deps on 22 that ended up on the GCP. What a mess that would be.

Departures from 22 are pretty rare. In addition to the usual wind concerns, could that be another reason they avoid using 22?
Ladies and gentlemen, this is your captain speaking. We have a small problem.
All four engines have stopped. We are doing our damnedest to get them under control.

I think the 22 deps are also more rare for noise abatement reasons. It's the only runway end that is very close to residential neighborhoods.

I have several blocks and a 1/5 mile of water between me and the end of rwy 13 deps....and it's loud here. Imagine that 22 departure noise that you hear at planeview all day while you're at home.

That'd be awesome! Well, maybe for about five seconds. :)
