We are getting ready to fly up to New York soon and I am just coming to you for an answer so that we don't have to pay the checked bag fee on US, at least not for two bags.
I have a backpack/laptop bag. Is that classified as a personal item or a carry on bag?

either is technically a personal item, but if the backpack is small enough you shouldn't have problems. what size is it? will it fit into an overhead?
it is mathematically impossible for either hummingbirds, or helicopters to fly. fortunately, neither are aware of this.
I think it will fit under the seat even. It will definitely fit in the overhead.
