Gorgeous shots, Moose. I'll have to join you one night for a tutorial on night shooting if you're willing.
Felipe, there's a CVS like 10 minutes from the overview on 160 by 485.

Thanks for the tip, I just looked it up on Google Maps. I don't think I ventured out that way, I was staying at the Double Tree on Yorkmont, just off the Billy Graham Pkwy.
Beautiful!
The American West Retro is an awesome shot!!
Wonderful pictures as usual guys, especially the night shots!
By the way, I will be in Charlotte this month, I don't know yet if the weekend of the 19th or the weekend of the 26th. Probably from Wednesday to Sunday. I will let you guys know when I have definite days. Also, until what time is the Overview open? Or it never closes?
Cheers!
The overview is open from 8am to 10:30pm - and last night, right at 10:30, CMPD hit the blue lights and got everyone out so he could lock up. I'll be around the weekend of the 19th, not sure yet about the 26th. Give me a shout and I'll try to meet up with you.
Cool pictures and stay safe down there. I hear Arthur has its eyes set on NC.
@xrbm, I should be around both of those weekends. I'll try to meet up with you as well.
Well, I'm going to re-pack my bags and will be hitting the road in the next hour.
Me too! Heading to Atlanta for the weekend - looks like I'm going to miss you again, Felipe.
That's how the game goes. Have fun in ATL!
Felipe, since you'll be in Charlatto for the 4th, try to snag some Knights tickets. They may be pretty expensive on StubHub but they usually have the best fireworks in the metro (although they're in a new ballpark this year).
A couple more "Not CLT" shots...got home from my Atlanta ride this afternoon, and after watching the recording of the NASCAR race from Daytona (it was rained out Saturday night and run today, ending around 3pm) I took a ride up to Concord to see if I might catch any of the team aircraft still arriving.

You may remember the SHR CRJ - I shot it in June 2013 at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton (KAVP) during the Pocono race weekend. Clearly it's gotten new colors.

Those last two shots are great, very nice work!
The last 2 are pretty cool. I'm still missing Panthers.
That's a nice looking CRJ too. I saw the first 3 Mesa planes that got painted when I was in Phoenix and they really look nice. This plane then has that "new plane" shine as well.
Is there a retirement date set for the 734s? I'm starting to think about heading down there again for Labor Day, as opposed to going to the Cleveland airshow, and I'll be happy to see those guys still flying.
From my trip in May (I finished editing this set at a Starbucks in Tempe, while I waited for my hotel room to be ready, and on that note, if you ever get the chance to do summer spoting at PHX around noon, just don't; the Starbucks is a far cooler hangout).

Thanks, guys! Felipe, if you visit on Labor Day weekend, you'll miss the US 734s. They are planning a final, celebratory revenue flight on Tuesday, August 19 - Flight US 0737, routing CLT-DFW-PHL-CLT.
And now, a few daytime shots...

AA has stopped flying to CLT with Eagle RJs - adding mainline flights, and I think, shifting some routes to US Express. We now see the 738, A319, and MD-83 on a regular basis.

Wow. That was fast. When they retired the 733s from PHX they thinned the fleet down to 2 or so over the course of a few months, so I was expecting to see them a bit longer. I'm going to look at maybe going on the weekend of the 16th, but we'll see, it's a 7h drive for me, so we'll see.
Nice shots Moose, Love the Cactus A330 !

Some nice catches Moose, especially the SA reg in CLT. Great light on the dash 8 shot.
Nice panning on the Piedmont retro Felip.
Went out to the Overview this afternoon, hoping to catch N822AW (US Airways Nevada scheme) and N329EN (first Piedmont Dash-8 in American Eagle colors), both of which were in and out several times today. Both managed to elude me - only got a couple of distant shots of Nevada, the Dash was 1 1/2 hours late departing, with no updated time listed, when I called it quits. The Spotting Gods were good to me however - Insel Air, which operates one flight into CLT from Curacao on Saturdays, and almost always uses 18L, departed on 18C...

Great catch Moose! I'd love to catch Insel at CLT. I looks like you really lucked out with the clouds, really nice contrast.
InselAir used 18C last Saturday when I was out there, and then JetBlue on Sunday. I was very pleased.
Took a ride out to CLT after work today (first day in a week that the sun was out...) to catch this Kalitta Air 742. It is being used by North Carolina based relief organization Samaritan’s Purse is airlifting protective equipment and supplies to Africa to help fight the Ebola outbreak.

This US A321 has eluded me forever - it was the only original US-painted A321 I hadn't shot. I saw it was coming in from BOS this afternoon, and was sure it was going to land on Rwy 23, but much to my surprise, it came in 18C.

Gosh, is CLT changing this fast?? So much AA in your latest update. --- But hey, those DAASHs are nice! N337EN must be the latest out of the shop.
Can't wait for early november. Plan to get down there for an afternoon at the overlook when they're going south and the trees are golden.
I knew that they were going to ramp up the painting after Labor Day, but yes, they pretty much have one plane going into the paint shop before the fumes from the previous plane have dissipated.
The way they are handling the painting also allows for quicker painting (1 CRJ, E-170, A319, A321, etc at the same time), so you can expedite the painting and you can get planes to roll off the paint shop every few days, even if the lead time is around 10 days.
Is the overlook still open? I though I'd read someplace that runway construction was going to close it by early fall.
I didn't get a chance to get down over the summer, would like to go if it's still open.
No, it's still open. When they do build the new runway, it will close, although there isn't an announced date on when the runway will be built or when the overview will close - we don't know if it will stay open during most construction, and close when the runway is ready, or if it will close earlier than that. Also, airport officials have said that there will be a new overview, but there has been no word on where that will be, or if it will be open when the current one closes.
Right now, the new runway is listed on their "Future Proposed Construction Projects" page, with a January 2015 start date.
How's the view from the new garage?
Thx! Good to know it will be open for a while. I want to get lift off/touchdown shots. The closest airport to me is PHL. And the high fences are a problem. I've seen some spotters out there standing on ladders mounted in the beds of pickup trucks, butttt, since i don't own a truck...
I could rent a truck, but a road trip to a new place will definitely be more fun!
I've got a 70-210 mated to a D7000. Is that enough lens?
Thx!
That's more than enough for shooting at the overview, and should be fine for some of the other spots we sometimes hit. If they are on North operations, you won't do well shooting 36R departures from the overview with that, but even the 100-400 is a little short for those.
Let me know when you plan to head down this way, I'll be glad to meet up with you if I'm around.
Great shots as usual, John. Nice catch on 220FR--I saw her fly over the RDU area on the way to IAD from CLT. Hope to be able to get back to CLT and catch up with you soon.
Thx moose, will do!
I hadn't been out to CLT to shoot in a month, and even though it was dark, I needed to get out the other night.

A question for Moose or the other locals: Around what time does the light get good in the afternoon this time of the year? I'm putting together a trip next weekend that includes Sat/Sun afternoons at the overlook.
Probably after 2 or so. Sun should be right down the runway at Noon, so give it a couple of hours to swing around. Sunset is around 5:15, although if they are landing 18C, the touchdown zone ends up in shade before that, as the area around the overview is raised above the runway.
If if I don't head up to NY for Christmas, I'll look to meet. Up with you.
I made my way down South last month and with a bit of luck I was able to get to the overlook minutes before sunset.
