UN General Assembly 2009 info
Hi everyone!
I'm new to the site :borat: and was thinking about coming to New York to go spotting during the UN General Assembly week, and was wondering what would be the best days to go?
Also, am I in the right forum? I did a search and didn't see any threads on this topic for 2009
Thanks in advance!
-Wendy :)
Re: UN General Assembly 2009 info
Welcome aboard, Wendy! Based on the UN calendar, and past history, I would expect the bulk of VIP arrivals on the weekend of Sept 19-20. The session itself opens on Tuesday, Sept. 15, but the high level meetings and general debate begin on Tuesday, Sept. 22. In the past, those are the sessions the various heads of state attend. I'm sure we will have a big crowd out that weekend for some spotting.
Re: UN General Assembly 2009 info
Welcome, Wendy! I am looking forward to a good UN season!
UN Week does work well in this forum, as it pertains to aircraft visitors, though it euqally might fit into spotting Planning. We'll keep it here since this is where it's at.
Re: UN General Assembly 2009 info
Thanks for the replies guys!! :borat:
So it seems that the bulk of the arrivals will be coming on a Saturday and Sunday (19th and 20th). I was planning on staying up there for 2 nights, so do you think it would be better to be there for Friday or Monday (in addition to the weekend). Like which day would everyone think would have more international VIP traffic arriving?
Any recommendations for cheap places to stay the night around JFK?
Re: UN General Assembly 2009 info
Wendy
Cheapest I have found when I've been up there is the Days Inn JFK ran about $115/night.
Re: UN General Assembly 2009 info
IIRC, 22R is to be closed again in September? If so, this should mean even more 13L action.
Re: UN General Assembly 2009 info
We can count on 5A-ONE visiting again this year. Gadaffi will be addressing the General Assembly.
Re: UN General Assembly 2009 info
If you dont need a particular hotel at the airport I would priceline a hotel and name my own price
Re: UN General Assembly 2009 info
Thanks for the hotel suggestions! Out of curiosity, are there any hotels at JFK that are comparable to the Renaissance hotel that overlooks ATL??
Also, what is 5A-ONE?? I looked up 5A and it said Alpine Air Express (??) but that Gadaffi dude is from Libya??

5A-ONE is the registration of Col. Kadaffi's ride, an A340:
Re: UN General Assembly 2009 info
Wow if 5A-ONE is coming I'm definitely going! ..to JFK that is. Somehow, someway even if I have to take the subway (like I did years ago) haha. No matter if I have to sleep near the approach to 31R or 13L? Over $100 a night.. I'm cheap so priceline is a better idea I'd say
What do you all think is the chance any other of these African "dudes" will show up in a 707 this year?

Re: UN General Assembly 2009 info
If Gadaffi is staying in NJ, it's possible 5A-ONE will go to Newark.
Re: UN General Assembly 2009 info
Oops, hehehe:) I didn't realize 5A-ONE was the plane's registration. That is one sweet-looking plane though. Hopefully it doesn't end up going to EWR...

Would be cool to get a heads up beforehand. I'm sure many of you already have it but for me it'd be a really exotic one. The smaller bizjets or A320 types not in airline paintscheme that will come in, I do not really care about.
Re: UN General Assembly 2009 info
any information on which heads of states or governments will be visiting?
My theory is with Obama as POTUS all these African/ME heads of states will be coming being it's his first year in office. Does my idea make any sense, yes no maybe? :borat:
