what's etops?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ETOPS
cost me 10 seconds to find it....
It's a monster with one eye...oh no that's cyclops.
Seriously it's Extended Twin Operations--relating to over water operations of twin engine airliners. ETOPS certification allows 2 engine aircraft to fly certain routes over water which would place them 120 min or 180 min from the nearest airport in the event of an engine failure. If I am not mistaken the 777 was the first aircraft to enter airline service with ETOPS certification as a new model.
Sorry for the humor--couldn't resist.
Just some history the frist ETOPS rated twin engine plane to cross the Atlantic was a TWA 767-200 from STL-Frankfurt.
