Re: NYCAviation on the Today Show - December 16th (Date Change!)
Well thanks to some dumb luck and great timing on my part I changed to channel 4 just as it was starting, GREAT JOB GUYS. Phil I was never a big Al Roker fan before this but boy what a jerk, very unimpressed with Al. Because it happend so fast Phil can you confirm it was you, Mel, Eric, and Matt M? Don't want to leave anyone out? Nice speaking job Phil.
Cheers

The video is up. I'm still clueless as to how they botched our names. Aside from Al being "complainy", I think it wasn't too bad. we're already getting a lot of Tweets and messages from people asking what Al's problem was and how fun it seems, so it's been bring out enthusiasts! Sorry if anyone is embarrassed.
NYCAviation on the Today Show
Re: NYCAviation on the Today Show - December 16th (Date Change!)
We did two days of filming, and Scotty was out to one of them, but was not in the group photo they showed...but threw in his name anyway. Brian Stevenson was also in the crowd. Mel was the only name they got right I think.

At least they were clever enough to get MY name right. :?

Thankfully.
Nice explanation Phil, I usually say "...people look at __________, I look at planes"
Not a bad piece.

Thanks, Ychocky. They did a 10-minute or so interview with me, and I was a little surprised that none of that aired. Lots of filming that wasn't share.

I just want to say that I'm not embarrassed or anything. Al made himself look bad, and the responses to the piece and comments around the web have been incredibly productive and ONLY critical of Al Roker. I don't think anything negative was done to me, NYCAviation, or the hobby. The geek stuff comes with the territory, and the good stuff filters right through. In the end, we and the hobby will always win.

I agree Al made himself look really bad.
I'm sure the piece got some people who are interested in spotting to the site and the bottom line is that's all that really matters.
Re: NYCAviation on the Today Show - December 16th (Date Change!)
I didn't get a chance to see it but heard from one friend who saw it. So they called Eric Scotty huh? lol.
They do say any publicity is good publicity. I watched morning TV for the first time in years today and saw that Spitzer's escort is now a writer for the post. I saw her on news 11 titled "relationship expert". Based on this, Phil you should have your own talk show on aviation in about 6 months :)
Who has a link to the piece?

Sorry Phil. I'm lagged at work. That's what happens when I don't shoot for a while. I saw it on the Today show site.
Phil I want to say I think you did a great job with this! If you don't understand flight, aviation and have a passion for the art of it then no amount of time will convey that appropriately. It's so much more than spotting planes and stems back to my grandfathers WWII era for me. It does stink though when others do not validate your feelings or passions.
They did really murder the names though. Al just wanted to break for lunch, little does he know that I paint walls too. lol
A+ for you Phil.
Re: NYCAviation on the Today Show - December 16th (Date Change!)
They could have covered both plane spotting AND metal detecting in one shot at Howard Beach. Almost the very rare "odd" hobby trifecta! :D
Re: NYCAviation on the Today Show - December 16th (Date Change!)
Al Roker acted like a tool bag. What are his hobbies besides eating? Otherwise great, it's nice to get some coverage on this hobby so people will maybe understand a little more and not call the police when they see a person with a camera! CBS's show 48 Hours did coverage on spotting many years ago and followed Jeff Devore and Ryan Hales for a day of spotting.

That's really mean. But very funny! haha
From one of the emails I received: "I wish Al Roker would just get that can of paint and paint himself into a corner."
