I think you've stumped everyone on this. I can't even begin to guess...
Maybe because it's so cold in Minnesota, and red is a nice warm color. :)

Uh I have no clue, is it because the Sun sets in the west? Red sunset, red tail, chasing the sun sort of thing? Or is it simply because they stand out in a crowd?
Because it's been their company's trademark since 1948?
Easier to find in the side of a glacier?

Northwest was one of the first US majors to start ferquent service to the Orient , and of course making good time saving use of flying over the polar region.
So the company thought it might be a good idea to have the tail red, in case a plane went down in all that snow. Intresting ea?!
