HDR, anyone else play?
I have been stuck on this method of photography for the last week and I
am learning so much so fast. I do not think I will ever take night shots
without this method. I am amazed at the results and inspired to go out
an just shoot anything.
The other night I went to the airport and did a few maximum exposure brackets with my camera
I use AEB in the menu's and set it to take 3 shots...
1st shot at 0 exposure comp
2nd shot at -2 exposure comp
3rd shot at +2 exposure comp
With these 3 images I can put together a HDR (High Dynamic Range)
photo that will let me read the tire maker off the black tires of an aircraft
yet not have any part of the shot overexposed. It is AMAZING to just
take some shots around the house..... Here is a good example of a shot
that is not possible without the HDR (or massive grain with photoshop).
Keep the detail in the dark areas but do not overexpose the flame badly...

How do you put them together?

I use a program called Photomatrix but there is sofware in the newer
Photoshop CS2. Normally, the photos look like ass because it is a high
dynamic range which means your little histogram feels like it is now 3
times the size it was with almost no chance of having any pixels blown out
or underexposed. You have incredible detail and the ability to alter the
photo to make it really pop but in any way you like.
Here is a edited HDR shot from the other night....I left it big so you can
see all the details....

If I was going to use the shot, I would have altered it for more contrast.

I like the first two in that last set. Reminds me of these pics I took in New Hampshire. It was during the Harvest Moon, so it was extra bright.

Yeah I just recently discovered HDR myself, its really addicting. I use Photomatix as well. I was lucky enough to get an HDR shot on jetphotos not to long ago.

Not perfect by any means but I still kinda like it.

Cool, here is another one from today, I am lovin this!

WOW.
that sky is freakin amazing.

ok Fred, now you have another convert....my first few tries at this HDR stuff....
Can you tell it's almost Christmas?

Wow, Very nice Moose....Once again, that is exactly what I was looking to do. Wonderful as usual. Now Nick an I were going to try to go out there on Wed evening if I can finally get better. I would like to get there just before dark if possible. Hope to see you there if your not busy ;)

Fred,
What were the exposure times for that bridge photo? Nice work!
-
I was in bulb mode and did a 30 second, 1 minute and 2 minute exposure. I could have had much less grain but chose to bring out the details of the clouds. I did not have the noise reduction on which was a big mistake as you can see.... here is another shot

Fred those shots are awesome, I need to try this sometime

Re: HDR, anyone else play?
So in a sence this emlimates backlitness?
-
Re: HDR, anyone else play?
Not necessarily. It brings out a whole new array of detail and color and you are able to (besides make very low lit shots work) really pull more out of a snapshot. In essence, you take an otherwise boring shot and bring a very spectacular life to it. Check out this guy's work. It's absolutely stunning. http://www.flickr.com/photos/kros

Re: HDR, anyone else play?
Now my question is...How many of you are rendering HDR in PS and how many are rendering using Photomatix?

It certainly is. I'm simply amazed by the shots in his gallery, that is some incredible style, skills and talent.

Re: HDR, anyone else play?
So when shooting against a backlit sky, is it better for me to play with HDR or just take a regular shot and play around with EV?
Also is HDR only best for night time shots/low light shots or does it fair pretty well during the day time?
-
Re: HDR, anyone else play?
His escalator shot took my breath away when I first saw it. The guy's unreal with this stuff.

You can put any shot you like, day or night, into HDR. It's all about what you envision for what you're shooting. The Poughkeepsie shot, I had dreamed of for months with the intent of using HDR. If you're shooting RAW, play with the EV first. To create an HDR image, you need at least 2 or 3 shots (or copies) of the same image with different exposure then merging them together. If you're using 3 shots, for example, one shot would be under exposed, one over exposed and one properly exposed. Then you merge them and play with luminosity, color and light saturation, and smoothness values to achieve the finished image to your liking.

Re: HDR, anyone else play?
There also really is no set workflow to the actual rendering of your shot as every image will be different and therefore the steps to your finished product will change from shot to shot. And every shot presents a new opportunity to learn and experiment . It's far from editing your aviation shots. The beautiful thing about HDR is that the finished product doesn't have to be perfect from a purist's photography standpoint to be truly artistic and also be appreciated as such.

Re: HDR, anyone else play?
I see now. Thanks for the info and explaining.
I try some HDR shots at PAE and BFI.

Re: HDR, anyone else play?
Anytime. Remember, HDR is not necessarily about making a picture come out oober perfect. It's about how artistic can one get. Pm me if you have anymore questions. :D

I was using Photoshop, and recently found Photomatix. I think Photomatix is a little easier to rend with.
Here are 2 recent HDR's from Bayport Aerodrome.

I am sorry to correct you but this statement is 180 degrees from the truth
HDR is all about getting the image Oober perfect, it allows you to capture all the data with no black and no white, all values that can be altered. It will make an image with a high dynamic range and low contrast.
Proccessing the HDR to make it artsy is the second step called tone mapping, and this will allow you to make the image fall to a low contrast black and white or so much tone mapping and color that it can look like a cartoon. The tone mapping is what most people think HDR is but it simply is not true. HDR is High Dynamic Range shot.... Think of it as a massive histogram and the image has LOTS MORE DATA.
I hope this helps

Re: HDR, anyone else play?
I use photomatix
Here are some examples
Inside an aircraft you can not expose as it is too dark.... then HDR come
into play
http://fromtheflightdeck.com/temp/HDR/727-6-12-07e.jpg
With just the camera, you can not expose dark christmas tree needles and a
light...the light would be completly overexposed...here you can see the
glass! I could have went further but did not want the overprocessed tone
mapping look
http://fromtheflightdeck.com/temp/HD...m_IMG_0049.jpg
The moon was way to bright here and I needed to hold the moonlight black...Processed way to far in tone mapping give it a cartoonish look, I like it still
http://fromtheflightdeck.com/temp/HDR/IMG_3749_7_8.jpg
Holding back you can see the posibilites....similar to dodge and burn on PS, the clouds look alive.... This was only HDR and tone mapping
http://fromtheflightdeck.com/temp/HDR/IMG_7384_2_3.jpg
When the light does not work for you....carry your own or post process....hdr gives you LOTS of info to process!!!!
http://fromtheflightdeck.com/temp/HD...9451_49_50.jpg
You can also to make reflections pop, check out the nose
http://fromtheflightdeck.com/temp/HDR/IMG_9627_5_6.jpg
http://fromtheflightdeck.com/temp/HD...9741_39_40.jpg
Well, that is just a few and they do not come close to showing what is possible. Since HDR I have been shooting into the sun with a smile and one burnt eyeball......Hope that is just me!

Re: HDR, anyone else play?
A question about the shots involving people; obviously it is not possible to take multiple pictures at different exposures because the people will move around. How do you go about those ones? Play with the exposures in Photoshop, create copies then combine? Would it be better if those shots were in RAW to get the exposures right?
-
Re: HDR, anyone else play?
I really do not have much to say as you answered your own questions correctly....
the girl shot was 3 Jpegs, I have in the past use 1 jpeg and while grainy
after making one dark and one light, you are able to tone map, but it is not
really an HDR. If you use RAW, you can get +2 stops and -2 stops with no
problem at all. Lots of people do 1 shot raw HDR's. For late night I usually
do many shots...... like 7 or 9 shot HDR's using JPEG. With those, I take
shots that people say are not possible. I just do it to see the look on their
face when they do see it!
With an aircraft that is moving, 1 shot will usually capture all the data I
need, then I can separate and HDR. I have used all three methods (even if
splitting a JPG is not really HDR). I use all three methods, different method
for the type of shot.
You got it so far from what you said...NOW IT IS TIME TO PLAY!
Beware of over and underexposed areas....HDR you NEED all the data.
1 shot HDR from 1 JPG that there was slight over exposed and the plane was
very dark! Looks good the the sky is good for nothing!!!

Re: HDR, anyone else play?
So a touch off topic but who is the girl on the rock? :borat:

Re: HDR, anyone else play?
no idea....she saw me taking pictures and started asking questions. She has seen my website online and knew of me. She was thrilled when I asked if I could take her picture. I sent her a copy.
I think she wanted me to do another shoot of her but have not had the time so I did not offer.
