Andrews cancelled their show this year due to budget cuts again.

Rhode Island announced they are having their show this year but it will be in May on the 17th & 18th.

Unfortunately, the NAVY will not be doing any Legacy Hornet or Super Hornet TAC Demos this year :frown:
If we're lucky Jones Beach might still be able to get the USAF F-22 Demo though !!
The ACC should be posting the 2014 F-22 Demo schedule soon ... Fingers crossed !!

Does anyone know if the parking lot for the old 56th Ressturant will be available? Last time I was out at Republic it was gated off. Scarey to think having that much extra pedestrian traffic on New Highway.

The B-2 was designed - and flown - by Northrop before the merger with Grumman. The plane was first displayed publicly in November 1988, and had its first flight in July 1989. Northrop and Grumman merged in 1994.

Yup. 100% correct. Very little pre-merger Grumman is still active. Actually, within the next year or so, only a handful of Grumman employees will remain on the island.

Considering the sequestration of all military demos last year and all the shows that were cancelled, I am thrilled to have the Blue Angels and an Osprey in our backyard.

As for statics the only thing you might see at a beach show is if the 106th brings in a Pave Hawk.

Just about a month to go!!!!!!!!

Restaurant is closed and property closed off. They are trying to get a tenant in there but so far its empty shell sits there!! I gather whoever buys the property will demo the old building first. The parking lot is sometimes closed off with wooden barriers but hopefully they are moved for the air show to allow additional parking for people during the show who want to see the Angels up close by the Main Terminal.

You would think they would do it for advertisement purposes and make sure they get the word out that you can buy a ride in the plan. Besides, whats it cost to fly? I would assume just the fuel cost, no?

From the web sites of a few of the better known B-17 operators, it costs $4K+ an hour to operate one. That's fuel, maintenance, oil, etc.

Billbo1970
2014-05-14, 06:43 AM
I think they overstate the cost, $4k/hr seems awfully high. Cruising speed consumes 50Gal/hr in fuel, so let's say that's $400. I'm sure the insurance is expensive, but that is a cost whether the plane is flying or parked in the hangar... in fact, more flight time would make the cost/hr lower. I don't know how they calculate that into the flight cost. Let's say insurance is $100k/yr., that works out to roughly $1900/wk. If we say the plane flys 200hrs per year (4hrs/wk on average) that add's $475/hr for insurance.
So that means it's $3,100+/hr., just in maintenance costs? Just doesn't seem right to me, especially since all of the work is done by volunteers. Sounds like the 'timesheet' effect:
You're hired to work 40 hours /week. You have to attribute all your hours to some project, even when there's nothing to do. Sounds like the aircraft maintenance engineers do the same thing... plane is costing money even when it's sitting on the ground static.

moose135
2014-05-14, 10:05 AM
Cruising speed consumes 50Gal/hr in fuel, so let's say that's $400..
Per engine - 200 gallons per hour total (See the chart on this page: http://www.azcaf.org/pages/aircraft_bios/B-17G_FlyFort.html) That's $1,600 by your math.

From http://www.johnweeks.com/b17active/

A B-17 will easily burn 200 gallons of fuel per hour, plus about 10 gallons of oil per hour. Consumables and wear items cost an estimated $3,000 per flight hour. For each hour a Flying Fortress spends in the air, ten are spent on the ground in maintenance. An engine overhaul can cost $40,000, and FAA required wing-spar inspections and repairs will cost each Flying Fortress in excess of $100,000.

Yes, some of the work is done by volunteers - but much of it, especially the larger work, has to be performed by licensed mechanics, often at a maintenance/repair shop, that needs to be paid for. Never mind the cost of replacement parts - when you can find them.

Yankee Lady has flown in the show in years past, wonder why this year the show is unable to afford it this year?

Fighting_falcon_51
2014-05-14, 05:02 PM
Bethpage FCU gives the warbirds a slot in the airshow and a certain amount of funding. It is up to the AAM to secure special guests such as Yankee Lady and Quicksilver. This of course adds a lot of money to the operating costs for the AAM but doesn't necessarily mean increased funding for the warbirds from the airshow.

Whether or not Yankee Lady or Quicksilver will fly in the show depends on whether they can secure sponsorship dollars, donations, and/or increased funding from the airshow. If they do not fly, still expect the local warbirds to participate in the airshow.

Billbo1970
2014-05-15, 10:42 AM
Is that # accurate? Are there really 10hrs of maintenance/hr of flight?! Let's assume $1000 of fuel per hr (and that's on the very high side @ $5/gal), and $400 of oil per hour (again, HIGH estimate of $40/gal) so there are additional costs of $2600/flight hr? Wouldn't MORE flight time reduce the /hr costs of the other factors in the equation?

Nick

Is that # accurate? Are there really 10hrs of maintenance/hr of flight?! Let's assume $1000 of fuel per hr (and that's on the very high side @ $5/gal), and $400 of oil per hour (again, HIGH estimate of $40/gal) so there are additional costs of $2600/flight hr? Wouldn't MORE flight time reduce the /hr costs of the other factors in the equation?

Actually Sheltair's price/gal of 100LL today per Air Nav is $7.94/gal. so Moose's fuel number is just about accurate.

Nice thanks. They were putting in the arresting cables this afternoon on 14/32. Finished around 4:15. SkyTypers came in (from Rhode Island?). Even in years past BA # 7 has flown in on Sunday night and then back out for the USN Graduation.

But it this year graduation is a Wednesday.

Also BA # 5 suffered an electrical issue at RI today and couldn't fly the demo. They shut her down and used the 7 plane.

I wouldn't be too concerned about blue angels number 5. Although the team usually only brings 7 F/A-18s to shows, the Squadron in total has 11 jets. 9 F/A-18C single-seaters and 2 F/A-18D two-seaters. Each D model usually has the number 7 on the back. However sometimes the two-seaters will fly with the squadron.

That Media flight video was actually taken 8 years ago, because sadly a year later in April 2007 the Blue Angel pilot in this video,
Lt. Kevin Davis call sign "Kojak" was killed during a Blue Angels performance down in Beaufort, South Carolina :frown:

Anyway, after #7 does a MAX climb takeoff at FRG for the Media Flight they usually head down towards the Beach
and then way out over the Ocean where they're able break the sound barrier during their 45 minute flight also.

What to do? Weather this weekend isn't promising: http://www.weather.com/weather/5-day/Farmingdale+NY+11735:4:US

weather.com isn't that reliable. I used to work for the Associate Press, so I can tell you for a fact that ALL major news outlets use the data from Weather Underground to create their forecasts. Weather Underground is showing that we're going to have a beautiful weekend!

I haven't been out to FRG since last year, but just out of curiosity is it still okay to park along New Highway (as stand on my car) to catch the Blue's departures?
Or would other places around the perimeter be better for catching their takeoffs?
